نَوائِبُcalamities إِنif جَلَّتgrew grave تَجَلَّتcleared away سَريعَةًswiftly
وَإِمّاand if تَوالَتfollowed in succession فيin الزَمانِtime تَوَلَّتِpassed away
Calamities, if they grow grave, swiftly clear away.
The strokes of fate, should they descend, descend swiftly,
And if they follow one another through time, they pass away.
Or follow on in time, they follow ceaselessly.
وَدُنياكَand your worldly life إِنif قَلَّتgrew scant أَقَلَّتbore up وَإِنand if قَلَتhated
فَمِنthen from قَلَتٍruin فيin الدينِfaith نَجَّتsaved وَعَلَّتِand raised up
And your worldly life, if scant, bears you up; and if it hates you,
And if your world contracts, greatly contracts, and wanes,
It saves you from ruin in faith and raises you high.
By waning faith, from such it gains and climbs immensely.
غَلَتgrew costly وَأَغالَتand suckled while pregnant ثُمَّthen غالَتslew وَأَوحَشَتand made desolate

It grew dear and suckled while pregnant, then slew and made desolate.
It climbed and towered, then it climbed and frightened,
And stoked fires and herded, and enticed and grew weary.
It frightened and alarmed, importuned and wearied.
وَصَلَّتand scorched بِنيرانٍwith fires وَصَلَّتand rang out سُيوفُهاits swords

And scorched with fires, and its swords rang out.
It joined with fires, its swords did join and strike,
And drew a keen sword of harm, and offered solace.
It drew a blade of harm and verily it struck.

It dislodged the young man and sent him slipping from his station.
It passed and slipped away with the lad from his place there,
And settled; then, when the knot was firmly secured, it untied it.
Until the knot was tied securely, then it slipped away.
