وَرَبُّ الناسِ يَصرُفُ ما تَنوطُ
Calamities hang every burden upon us,
Every heavy burden is fastened upon us,
and the Lord of humankind turns aside what they hang.
Yet God may change whatever is fastened.

إِذا ما قارَنَ الكَفَنَ الحُنوطُ
And my saltbush will not ripen in any land
There is no despairer so vile on earth,
when the funerary perfume joins the shroud.
That shroud and coffin will not make despondent.
وَلَمand did not أَقنَطI despair لِسوءِbecause of the evil الفِعلِof the conduct مِنّيon my part

And I have not despaired at my evil conduct,
I am not in despair because of my evil acts,
though despair befits one who acts as I have.
Though by rights acts like them make one despondent.
