By my life, one individual's appearance has spared you,

Among the peoples of humankind, the need for a byname or name.

Yet clarification was added concerning you; we merely

    Followed an age-old custom.

Whatever fault of character there is among us

Was already found in the tribe of ʿĀd and in Ṭasm.

When we disperse, we are freed from harm,

And the shepherd pasturing his flock has no need to brand it.

Depart from the ailing earth in the morning,

And accept nothing for the incurable disease but excision.

And a young man's soul never ceased, amid calamities,

To grapple with them until it broke free of the body.

We patiently endured God's decree, though the soul was free,

And it knew the advantage conferred by unequal shares.
