It is as though I lived in the days of ʿĀd,

Keeping company with the clan of Qayl or Murayd.

And calamities have spared no brave man,

That they should spare ʿUtaybah or Durayd.

I desire forgiveness now, for I

Await the death of a she-ibex on a crag.

And indeed the days’ piercing shafts strike down

Their eagles and the little shrike alike.
