    As for time, it is a succession of connected moments.

    O Saʿd, alas for you! Have you sensed who Bulaʿ is?

    Keep your good deed secret, and do what you have intended.

    Indeed, the Sovereign is aware of secrets.

    And ride the night's darkness, not an old camel or a horse,

    As though the bright stars within it were limping she-camels.

    لَكِنَّهُ مِن بَقايا آكِلٍ صَلَعُ

    The crescent is no lion's claw for you to fear;

    Rather, it is a rind among an eater's leftovers.

    And colocynth in whose wake white honey is found

    Is better than honey followed by bitter plants.

    And if greatness makes you foolish—may God guide you—

    For every lofty mountain's lot is baldness.

    And Umm Dafr—Mother of Stench—when you divorce her, offers

    A gift, and is like a wife when she buys her divorce.

    وَقَد دَنَوتُ فَحُقَّ الخَوفُ وَالهَلَعُ

    And all my life I have journeyed slowly toward my grave;

    Now I have drawn near, so fear and panic are warranted.

    And what are we—or the many creatures of a world—

    Before a power, part of which swallows the celestial spheres?

    أَمامَهُ مِن بُروقٍ أَلسُنٌ دُلَعُ

    Thunder roared until I imagined it a lion;

    Before it were protruding tongues of lightning.
