    وَلا يَرُدُّ الحِمامَ الدِرعُ وَالتُرُسُ

    As for the sword, it has not brought you nearer your appointed end;

nor do armor and shields ward off death.

And all people are the Creator's handiwork,

like writing, read for a time and then effaced.

    وَكَيفَ نُسكُ غَّويٍّ رُمحُهُ وَرِسُ

    Some people have claimed piety, by their own account;

but how can a wayward man be pious, his spear yellowed with blood?

And he has incurred sin, surrounded by his companions,

and by the arrows, the sword, the Khatt spear, and the horse.

O gazelle, what business have you befriending the lion?

Indeed, ferocity is among the traits of lions.

Does the lion know, when it goes forth to prey,

that before long it will itself be preyed upon?

For whom do you exact punishment for the offense gone by?

And the bell did not stir until it was set in motion.

People admire words that, if put to the test

one day, prove worse than inarticulacy and muteness.

And the house of Israel began the morning in their schools

with recitation; yet all they studied was absurdity.

You lowered your bucket, earnestly seeking water,

but the bucket is not to blame when the rope betrays you.

And wretched is the fruit the gatherers hope for,

if one versed in planting says, 'Wretched is what they planted.'

The vulture lived as long as the Sovereign decreed for it,

and its dwelling has neither lock nor guards.

Their ill-wisher saw the household's mourning,

so he imagined it was nothing but a wedding.
