أَماas for القِيامَةُthe Resurrection فَالتَنازُعُthen dispute شائِعٌwidespread
أَما القِيامَةُ فَالتَنازُعُ شائِعٌ
فيهاabout it وَماand there is no لِخَبيثِهاfor its evil إَصحارُdisclosure
فيها وَما لِخَبيثِها إَصحارُ
As for the Resurrection, dispute is widespread
about it, and its evil is not laid bare.
قالَتhave said مَعاشِرُgroups of people ماthere is no لِلُؤلُؤِfor a pearl عائِمٍfloating
قالَت مَعاشِرُ ما لِلُؤلُؤِ عائِمٍ
يَوماًever إِلىto ظُلَمِdarknesses المَحارِoyster shells مَحارُreturn
يَوماً إِلى ظُلَمِ المَحارِ مَحارُ
Some groups have said: a pearl afloat has no
return, ever, to the darkness of oyster shells.
وَبَدائِعُand the wonders اللَهِGod القَديرِthe All-Powerful كَثيرَةٌmany
وَبَدائِعُ اللَهِ القَديرِ كَثيرَةٌ
فَيَحورُso it turns back فيهاamid them لُبُّناour intellect وَيَحارُand is bewildered
فَيَحورُ فيها لُبُّنا وَيَحارُ
And the wonders of God Almighty are many,
so our reason recoils before them and is bewildered.
هَذيthese حُروفُletters اللَفظِspeech سَطرٌa line واحِدٌsingle
هَذي حُروفُ اللَفظِ سَطرٌ واحِدٌ
مِنهاfrom them يُؤَلَّفُare composed لِلكَلامِfor discourse بِحارُseas
مِنها يُؤَلَّفُ لِلكَلامِ بِحارُ
These letters of speech form a single line;
from them, seas of discourse are composed.
أَفهِمmake understand أَخاكَyour brother بِماwith whatever تَشاءُyou wish وَلاand do not تُبَلcare
أَفهِم أَخاكَ بِما تَشاءُ وَلا تُبَل
ياO حارِḤāri قُلتَyou said هُناكَthere أَوor ياO حارُḤāru
يا حارِ قُلتَ هُناكَ أَو يا حارُ
Make your brother understand however you wish, and do not mind
whether you said there 'O Ḥāri' or 'O Ḥāru'.
غَرَضُaim الفَتىthe young man الإِخبارُconveying information عَمّاabout what عِندَهُhe has
غَرَضُ الفَتى الإِخبارُ عَمّا عِندَهُ
وَمِنَand among الرِجالِmen بِقَولِهِwith his speech سَحّارُa master enchanter
وَمِنَ الرِجالِ بِقَولِهِ سَحّارُ
A young man's aim is to convey what he has in mind,
and among men is one whose speech casts spells.
لَمdid not تَأتِcome آصاليmy late afternoons بِماwith what أَناI شاكِرٌgrateful
لَم تَأتِ آصالي بِما أَنا شاكِرٌ
مِنهاfrom them فَتَفعَلَso that they might do مِثلَهُits like الأَسحارُthe predawn hours
مِنها فَتَفعَلَ مِثلَهُ الأَسحارُ
My late afternoons have brought me nothing to be grateful for
from them, for the hours before dawn to do likewise.
