    Are the stars of night dead, or sentient,

    And without reason—or do their kind possess sense and reason?

    Some people believed in recompense and its existence,

    And some men said, "You are nothing but herbage."

    وَأَمّا جَميلاً مِن فِعالٍ فَلا تَقلوا

    So I counsel you: as for what is vile, shun it;

    And as for good deeds, do not despise them.

    For I have found that the soul shows remorse

    For what it has committed, when departure summons it.

    And if our souls have rusted in our bodies,

    Then one day they may well be polished anew.
