And I found the traits of virtue estranged among people,

and this age has left its strangers destitute.

And indeed a young man, as I see it, resembles his age

more in character than he resembles his father.

And our father is this dust, and it has always been

more generous of hand than all who trace their descent to it.

It delivers to those above it its Lord's sustenance,

faithfully, and grants protection to those concealed within it.

And nothing is like goodness: people resolve to abandon it,

yet it becomes freely available to those who acquire it.

And the soul's share is apportioned east and west,

according to fate, among the obscure and the renowned.

Things resemble one another in nature and form,

but no likeness of your Lord has ever been heard of.
