An ignorant fabricator called himself Surur (Joy);
A fool who feigns delight is hardly wise,
May dust fill his mouth! Does time hold any joy?
For in this life what lasting joy lies?

Yes, there is one part among many thousands
A little while of pleasure we may own,
That is good; the remaining parts are evils.
Midst countless hours of sorrow we have known.

Wealth and poverty, remembrance and heedlessness,
Mirth, want, forgetfulness and heedlessness,
And honor and humiliation—all of that is delusion.
Renown, disgrace - all empty nothingness.

A place that cannot be moved has enclosed us,
This world's a place we briefly occupy,
And time, which passes by its inhabitants.
And time for us is but to pass and fly.

So charge against the champions, or charge into the fray:
Recount the mighty heroes if you can,
These nights have their own assault and repeated charges.
For nights like these make little of a man.

The rising sun's eye lies beyond the reach of eye-powder;
The morning star at dawn begins to fade,
It pours forth whenever morning appears.
Its fleeting beauty destined to evade.
