وَقالَand said أَبوAbu (father of) حَنيفَةَHanifa لاnot يَجوزُis permissible
Al-Shafi‘i permitted doing something,
And Abu Hanifa said, “It is not permissible.”
فَضَلَّso went astray الشيبُthe gray-haired men وَالشُبّانُand the young men مِنّاamong us
وَماand not اِهتَدَتِfound guidance الفَتاةُthe young woman وَلاnor العَجوزُthe old woman
So the gray-haired and the young men among us went astray,
And neither the young woman nor the old woman found guidance.

فَكانَso there was لِأَمرِهِfor his bidding فيهِمamong them نَجوزُone quick to carry things out
Indeed, the jurist lodged in a people's home,
So among them was one quick to carry out his bidding.
وَلَمand did not آمَنfeel secure عَلىfor الفُقَهاءِthe jurists حَبساًimprisonment
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle قيلَit is said لِلأُمَناءِto the trustworthy جوزُواpass through!
And I feared imprisonment for the jurists,
When the trustworthy are told, “Pass through!”
