عَصرُa time of شِتاءٍwinter وَعَصرُand a time of قَيظٍsummer heat
عَصرُ شِتاءٍ وَعَصرُ قَيظٍ
وَعيدُand a feast of فِطرٍbreaking the fast وَعيدُand a feast of نَحرِsacrifice
وَعيدُ فِطرٍ وَعيدُ نَحرِ
A time of winter, and a time of summer heat,
And the Feast of Fast-breaking, and the Feast of Sacrifice,
وَيَومُand a day of نُعمىbliss وَيَومُand a day of بُؤسٍmisery
وَيَومُ نُعمى وَيَومُ بُؤسٍ
وَنَحنُwhile we فيin خُدعَةٍdeception وَسِحرِand sorcery
وَنَحنُ في خُدعَةٍ وَسِحرِ
And a day of bliss, and a day of misery,
While we are deceived and bewitched.
كَأَنَّناas though we were وَالزَمانُwhile time يَمضيpasses
كَأَنَّنا وَالزَمانُ يَمضي
رَكبُa company of travelers سَفينٍships بِلُجِّin the midst of بَحرِa sea
رَكبُ سَفينٍ بِلُجِّ بَحرِ
As though we, while time passes,
Were passengers aboard ships on the open sea.
ياO طِفلُchild حَلَّتhave descended بِكَupon you الرَزاياthe calamities
يا طِفلُ حَلَّت بِكَ الرَزايا
فَأَنتَso you are مِنهاbecause of them صَريمُsevered سَحرِlungs
فَأَنتَ مِنها صَريمُ سَحرِ
O child, calamities have descended upon you,
So they have left you with severed lungs.
بِأَيِّfor what ذَنبٍsin أُخِذتَyou were punished فيناamong us
بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ أُخِذتَ فينا
لَمdid not تَجنِyou commit wrongdoing إِلّاexcept كَذَنبِlike the sin of صُحرِṢuḥr
لَم تَجنِ إِلّا كَذَنبِ صُحرِ
For what sin were you punished in our midst?
You did no wrong, save a wrong like Ṣuḥr's.
