    فَاِنظُرَن أَينَ جادَ ذاكَ الحَبِيُّ

    A raincloud of Safar, followed by one of Rajab;

    so look where that creeping raincloud poured its bounty.

    رِسُ وَالدَهرُ فيهِ مَعناً خَبِيُّ

    Persia claimed that her fire had not gone out;

    and time holds a hidden meaning.

    Our lookout slept, heedless of us; the ruin of the

    caravan is feared if its lookout sleeps, heedless of it.

    All beings, in every aspect, were known

    to the First, beside whom Simāk is a child,

    Creator of fires. The servant does not feign stupidity,

    but he is weak and foolish.

    O gullible one, if you have been endowed with reason,

    then consult it, for every intellect is a prophet.

    They milked the cups' rich flow and disregarded

    what al-Karakhī and al-Ḥalabī narrated.

    لا يَهنَأُ شَرابُكَ العِنَبِيُّ

    And my drink is pure water, and it suffices me;

    your grape-wine is not pleasant.

    And of what is gulped, a silvery draught suffices me

    when your unmixed golden wine is gulped.

    The two captives bewitched you: a white one

    and a red one, a captive from the vineyards.

    This one was brought with brown spears, and that one

    with yellow coins; she has a fiery father.

    An overpowering fate, and an ancient decree—

    under it, the submissive and the defiant are alike.

    وَتَساوى الزَنجِيُّ وَالعَرَبِيُّ

    And diversity comes from an element uniform in itself;

    and the Zanjī and the Arab stand equal.

    Aṣfar of Qays deceived you through discord

    for a while, then a Thaʿlabī Aṣfar.
