يَصونُ الحِجى وَالبَذلَ أَعراضُ مَعشَرٍ

يَصونُ الحِجى وَالبَذلَ أَعراضُ مَعشَرٍ

وَأَينَ يُرى العِرضُ الَّذي يُبذَلُ

وَأَينَ يُرى العِرضُ الَّذي يُبذَلُ

A people's honor safeguards reason and generosity.

They protect speech and generosity, the traits of a people,

And where is the honor that is given away to be seen?

Yet where is the honor that gets sacrificed?

وَصاحِبُ نُكرٍ باتَ يُعذَرُ بَينَنا

وَصاحِبُ نُكرٍ باتَ يُعذَرُ بَينَنا

وَفاعِلُ مَعروفٍ يُلامُ وَيُعذَلُ

وَفاعِلُ مَعروفٍ يُلامُ وَيُعذَلُ

And an evildoer has come to be excused among us,

And one who commits wrong is excused among us,

while one who does good is blamed and reproached.

While one who does good is blamed and abandoned.

وَقِدماً وَجَدنا مُبطِلَ القَومِ يَعتَدي

وَقِدماً وَجَدنا مُبطِلَ القَومِ يَعتَدي

فَيُنصَرُ وَالغادي مَعَ الحَقِّ يُخذَلُ

فَيُنصَرُ وَالغادي مَعَ الحَقِّ يُخذَلُ

And we have long found the wrongdoer among the people transgressing,

And long ago we found those who invalidate the people transgress,

so he is supported, while one who goes forth with truth is forsaken.

Yet they are helped while the righteous with truth are forsaken.

فَإِن يَكُ رَذلاً عَصرُنا وَأَنامُهُ

فَإِن يَكُ رَذلاً عَصرُنا وَأَنامُهُ

فَما بَعدَ هَذا العَصرِ شَرٌّ وَأَرذَلُ

فَما بَعدَ هَذا العَصرِ شَرٌّ وَأَرذَلُ

So if our age and its people are base,

So if our time and its people are disgraceful,

then what comes after this age is worse and baser.

Then after this time will be worse and more despicable.
