    وَلِلَّهِ مَولاهُ المَمالِكُ وَالقَهرُ

    A king, out of folly, styled himself 'Conqueror';

Yet to God, his Lord, belong the kingdoms and the power to subdue.

Do you resent being called base and blameworthy,

When it is baseness enough that Time is your father?

The fool, in his ignorance, married his world,

And indeed she rebelled after the bridal gift was received.

Purify yourself by keeping away from her harm and her guile,

For she is a harlot for whom purity is impossible.

And I spent my life in breaths, dividing

The day by them, then the month, one month following another,

Little by little, as a lead was gained

Over others by a walker with breathlessness in his breast,

Like a tiny ant on a sand dune's back, borne ever onward

By its journey, until the dune's back lay behind it.
