A creation that outmatched mankind through subtlety,

And those tracing its source ascribed it to the Almighty.

A King who created the heavens; so the full moon

Is before Him in the guise of a constable.

    People, until it assailed Abarwaz.

Did an observer’s astronomical tables err about the meanings of the

Shining stars, or did raiders descend with death?

Parting was proclaimed in Ziyad’s encampment

By ill-omened birds, as though they were soothsayers.

And Zaynab’s departure grows light upon the heart,

Though it holds something like leaping sparks,

For souls that make do with patient endurance,

Awaiting a stolen chance for a draught of water.

A giver of it in times of plenty is not

Like a giver in times of want.

And we found the keepers of wealth had squandered it

And left an opening for shameful things.

And calamities are my visitors, by my own choice,

And all else, thereafter, puts me to the test.

And the nights are mockers, ever returning

To their Abu Jad and their Hawwaz.

    وَهِيَ في الغَدرِ كَالظِلالِ الأَوازي

    I do not deceive you about pursuing high honors;

And in treachery they resemble receding shadows.

Even if you owned all the arak trees and the

Ashil trees, you would not obtain a tooth-stick.

Give us water—we are travelers in a land

That has made us thirsty, and we have no water.

We grope through the night, and the mature camels are like

Sandgrouse thirsting for their fifth-day drink, startled by swooping hawks.

So the caravan hastened, seeking safety

From death; victory belongs to the victor.

And when fingertips acquire a possession,

It becomes ruin in the possessor’s grasp.
