هجيت ما بي وقد كشفت مكنوني

وذعت سري وما ضمنت مظنوني

You mocked my affliction and laid bare what I kept hidden.

And you divulged my secret, failing my expectations.

وزدتني فوق وضح الجرح هاشمة

وواجب منك بالاسعاف تنسوني

And added a bone-shattering wound to my open wound.

Yet your duty is to help me forget through comfort.

إن الحبيب الذي في الحزن يغريني

ليس الحبيب الذي فيه يعزيني

The beloved who draws me into sorrow

Is not the beloved who consoles me in it.

عيني على أختها تبكي أسى بدم

فإن قدرتم على رد فعينوني

My eye weeps blood in grief for its sister.

So if you can bring her back, help me.

صبري على الحب مدفون بتربته

والحزن حي عليه غير مدفون

My patience in love is buried in its soil,

While sorrow lives above it, unburied.

إن البكاء لمأمون على مقلي

غدا وسلوان قلبي غير مأمون

Weeping is assured for my eyes

Tomorrow, but my heart's solace is not assured.

فإن كنت جلدا على الأيام مطبرا

مذ كنت خلوا بحبي غير محزن

For if I was steadfast, enduring the days,

When I was alone with my beloved, free from sorrow,

والمرء يعرف إلا عند شدته

قبل الشدائد في أبواب مكنون

A person is known only in his hardship;

Before adversity, he is hidden behind doors.

وكنت أعجب من قيس ولوعته

فاليوم قيس وغيلان هما دوني

I used to marvel at Qays and his anguish;

Today, Qays and Ghaylan both fall short of me.

لولا الرضى بالقضا الجاري لمت أسى

أو عشت في الجن أو في زي مجنون

Were it not for acceptance of the unfolding decree, I would have died of grief,

Or lived among the jinn, or in a madman's guise.

من لي بطاهرة البردين ساترة ال

خدين فالعقل منها غير مأمون

Who can find me a woman pure in both her robes, veiling her

Cheeks—for reason is not safe from her?

لم تخز أولادها والوالدين ولا

بين الرجال إذا ناضلت تخزيني

She did not disgrace her children or her parents, nor

Did she disgrace me among men when I contended.

أمينة راقبت في اللَه خلوتها

مأمونة الفعل في الدنيا وفي الدين

Trustworthy, she guarded her solitude in reverence for God,

Trustworthy in deed, in worldly life and in faith.

تصون عرضي على عيني وفي حضري

مذ طبعها قال يا بنت العلا صوني

She guards my honor before my eyes and in my presence,

Since her nature said, 'Daughter of nobility, guard it.'

قد أغبنتني الليالي الخائنات بها

وكنت لولا الليالي غير مغبون

The treacherous nights have cheated me of her;

Without those nights, I would not have been cheated.

رضىً بما قدر الباري بها وبنا

فنحن إلا بنو الأمواه والطين

I accept what the Creator has decreed for her and for us,

For we are only children of water and clay.

مثل البهائم والدنيا فروضتنا

نرعى ونشرب من ماء إلى حين

Like beasts, with the world our pasture,

We graze and drink water for a while.

نسيى في هذه الدنيا على خطر

سير السفينة في لج من الهون

We travel through this world in peril,

Like a ship sailing through a deep sea of humiliation.

أقل شيء فيؤذينا ويفرحنا

نزر من المال أو دون من الدون

The slightest thing hurts us; what gladdens us is

A little money, or less than the least.

لم ندر باقية منا وعاقبة

فيها كأنا براذين البراذين

We know neither what remains of us nor our outcome

In it, as though we were packhorses among packhorses.

ليس العقول الذي فينا بنافعة

هيهات ينفع عقل غير مثقون

The minds within us are of no use;

Far from it—an unsound mind cannot help.

يا رب عفوك إني منك في ثقة

ليس اتكالي على فعلي ولا ديني

O Lord, grant Your pardon! In You I trust.

I rely neither on my deeds nor on my faith.

جد لي ونج عليا من عذاب غدٍ

واحفظه في هذه الدنيا ونجيني

Be generous to me, and save Ali from tomorrow's torment;

Protect him in this world, and save me.

فإنه ذخرتي عوني أخي ثقتي

إن أدعه في ملمات يلبيني

For he is my treasure, my help, my brother, my confidant;

If I call him in calamities, he answers me.

كل الفقايد عندي فهي هينة

إذا بقي قل لها جلي أو هوني

Every loss is easy for me to bear,

If he remains—tell them, 'Be grave or light.'
