Yes, this lowly world is an object of love.

For were it not for punishment and sundering death,

نعيش سكارى من حميا جماعها

نعيش سكارى من حميا جماعها

ونصبح كاسات المنايا نعتق

ونصبح كاسات المنايا نعتق

we would live drunk on the ardor of union with her,

and at dawn escape the cups of death.

نؤمل آمالاً ومن دون نيلها

نؤمل آمالاً ومن دون نيلها

مصائب منها رابط الجأش يفرق

مصائب منها رابط الجأش يفرق

We cherish hopes, but between us and attaining them

lie calamities that make even the steadfast heart afraid.

نفرق أعمالاً علينا تجمعت

نفرق أعمالاً علينا تجمعت

ونجمع فيها والليالي تفرق

ونجمع فيها والليالي تفرق

We divide tasks that have piled upon us,

and we amass within it, while the nights scatter.

لنا هذه الدُنيا رياض مريعة

لنا هذه الدُنيا رياض مريعة

ونحن كمثل السرب يرعى ويلمق

ونحن كمثل السرب يرعى ويلمق

To us this world is lush meadows,

and we are like a herd that grazes and looks about,

ولم يدر أن الموت بالروض حائل

ولم يدر أن الموت بالروض حائل

وأشراكه الآمال والنهج ضيق

وأشراكه الآمال والنهج ضيق

unaware that death blocks its way in the meadow,

and its snares are hopes, and the path is narrow.

يروعنا لوح الأران إذا بدا

يروعنا لوح الأران إذا بدا

على إثره نوح سريع مصهلق

على إثره نوح سريع مصهلق

The sight of the bier terrifies us when it appears;

swift, clamorous wailing follows in its wake.

يودع منا البعض بعضا لمنزل

يودع منا البعض بعضا لمنزل

به خد من يحتل بالرغم يلصق

به خد من يحتل بالرغم يلصق

Some of us bid others farewell as they depart for a dwelling

where the occupant's cheek is pressed down against his will.

ونرجع في قسم المواريث بيننا

ونرجع في قسم المواريث بيننا

ولم ندر من أبقوا المواريث ما لقوا

ولم ندر من أبقوا المواريث ما لقوا

And we return to dividing the inheritances among ourselves,

and do not know what those who left the inheritances behind encountered.

ولا عندنا غير التعازي مناجم

ولا عندنا غير التعازي مناجم

وما هي إلا سنة لا تمحق

وما هي إلا سنة لا تمحق

And we have no recourse but condolences;

and this is only a custom that cannot be effaced.

ويا عجباً ميتاً يعزيه ميت

ويا عجباً ميتاً يعزيه ميت

على ميت والموت ما عنه معتق

على ميت والموت ما عنه معتق

And how strange—a dead man consoled by a dead man

over a dead man—and from death there is no release!

وما هي إلا منهج الكل سالك

وما هي إلا منهج الكل سالك

وباب إلى الأخرى فللخلق مطلق

وباب إلى الأخرى فللخلق مطلق

And it is only a path that everyone travels,

and a door to the hereafter, open to all creation.

فطوبى لميت كان اللَه زاده

فطوبى لميت كان اللَه زاده

ويا نحس ميت ما لذاك يوفق

ويا نحس ميت ما لذاك يوفق

Blessed, then, is the dead man whose provision was God;

and woe to a dead man not granted success in that!

فسابقة المخلوق خاتمة له

فسابقة المخلوق خاتمة له

مقدرة في اللوح من قبل يخلق

مقدرة في اللوح من قبل يخلق

For a creature's foreordained fate is its final end,

decreed on the Tablet before it is created.

رضينا بحكم اللَه فينا لأننا

رضينا بحكم اللَه فينا لأننا

عبيد وما عما قضى اللَه مائق

عبيد وما عما قضى اللَه مائق

We have accepted God's judgment upon us, for we are

servants, and no fool can escape what God has decreed.

عزاء أَيا عزان فالتزم العزا

عزاء أَيا عزان فالتزم العزا

فإنك لو ما عشت ما عشت تلحق

فإنك لو ما عشت ما عشت تلحق

Be patient, O Azzan; hold fast to patience,

for however long you live, you will join them.

أَبوك مضى قبل ابنه وابنه مضى

أَبوك مضى قبل ابنه وابنه مضى

على إثره والابن يقفو وينسق

على إثره والابن يقفو وينسق

Your father departed before his son, and his son departed

in his wake; the son follows and falls into line.

فإن المنايا لا خصوص وإنها

فإن المنايا لا خصوص وإنها

عموم ولكن السعيد الموفق

عموم ولكن السعيد الموفق

For death is not reserved for a few; it is

universal; yet fortunate is the one granted success.

وطول البكا والحزن لا يجتدي الرضى

وطول البكا والحزن لا يجتدي الرضى

بلى إنه إن دام للجسم مخلق

بلى إنه إن دام للجسم مخلق

And prolonged weeping and sorrow do not bring contentment;

indeed, if it persists, it wears the body out.

فليس علي راجعاً لك مذ مضى

فليس علي راجعاً لك مذ مضى

ولو عشت للأجفان حُزناً تمزق

ولو عشت للأجفان حُزناً تمزق

For Ali will not return to you now that he has departed,

even if you spent your life tearing your eyelids in grief.

وَإِن عاش مولانا ابن سلطان يعرب

وَإِن عاش مولانا ابن سلطان يعرب

فكلكمُ من فيض نعماه ينفق

فكلكمُ من فيض نعماه ينفق

And if our lord Ya'rub, son of Sultan, lives,

then each of you will spend from his overflowing bounty.

هو الخلف الباقي بعمران ملكه

هو الخلف الباقي بعمران ملكه

فيحرم من يبغي ومن شاء يرزق

فيحرم من يبغي ومن شاء يرزق

He is the surviving successor, with his realm flourishing;

so he withholds from whom he wishes, and provides for whom he wills.
