Will someone convey, on my behalf, to Bashir son of Jum‘ah
O messenger, inform Bishr bin Jama'a
the counsel of one who never ceases to counsel for God's sake?
Of advice from one who still advises for God
عليكyou must adhere بطرقto the paths of المفلحينthe successful وسعيهمand their striving
لعلكperhaps you فيin داريكyour two abodes بالفوزthrough triumph تفلحwill prosper
Follow the paths of the successful and their striving,
Follow the paths of the successful and their striving
so that you may triumph and prosper in both your abodes.
Perhaps in your abode you may attain success
دعleave الشغلpreoccupation منfrom دنياكyour worldly life فيin; for شغلoccupation with غيرهاwhat is other than it
فشغلكfor your occupation بالأَخرىwith the other life أَجلّnobler وأَربحand more profitable
Leave your worldly occupation for occupation with the other life,
Leave your worldly occupation for another occupation
for your occupation with the hereafter is nobler and more profitable.
For your occupation with the next is more sublime and profitable
إِذاif رمتyou seek فيin الدنياthis world صلاحاًwell-being معجلاimmediate
فجمعكthen your storing up للأَخرىfor the other life الصلاحrighteousness فأَصلحso set things right
If you seek immediate well-being in this world,
If you seek righteousness in this world hastily
then store up righteousness for the other life, and set things right.
Then gathering for the next is the most righteous

O delight of my eye, I am weeping, full of concern,
The delight of my eye is that I am compassionate about you
and my tongue reveals my heart's secret concerning you.
And my heart's secret is eloquent in you

وَدعand leave عنكَaway from you ماwhat تدنيbring near الأَمانيwishes وتُنزحand carry far away
Keep company with Time's daughters through knowledge and piety,
So befriend the daughters of time with knowledge and piety
and leave aside what wishes bring near and carry far away.
And leave behind what desires debase and displace
فماfor not ياO لهويناfor indolence يدركattains المرءa person ماwhat ارتضىhe has chosen
فداءfor the disease of الهويناindolence لهوit indeed is داءa disease مبرِّحagonizing
For—alas for indolence!—a man does not attain what he desires;
For by our desires, man cannot attain what he desires
for the disease of indolence is indeed an agonizing disease.
To our desires, desiring is an alleviating affliction

وعلّand 'maybe' ومهماand 'whatever' سوف'shall; will' أُمسيI reach evening وأَصبحand I reach morning
And knowledge is not attained by 'until' or 'perhaps,'
Knowledge is not attained by "perhaps" or "maybe"
nor 'maybe,' 'whatever,' or 'I shall pass the evening and morning.'
Know and whatever I become in the morning and evening

The seeker of noble knowledge has signs
For the seeker of noble knowledge there are signs
that mark him out and make things clear like the sun:
That guide to it, like the sun making clear

So hate gathering wealth beyond your livelihood
and love of expounding books wherever they are explained;
And love explaining books wherever they are explained

forsaking sweet sleep when the night is darkest,
And forsake the pleasure of soft sleep and the long night
and joining forenoon to night as you read and make things right.
And join the morning to the night reading and correcting

The heights are not reached, nor are wishes attained,
For no youth attains the heights or reaches his goal
by a youth who lays his side upon bedding;
A youth whose side atop cushions is cast

Unless one who has an ambition that leads
that, in his quest, butts against the heads of the two Simak stars.
And an aspiration with which leaders clash

By the sun you read, and in the darkness by his lamp;
Reading by the sun and studying by lamp light
when dark night descends, you turn toward the lamps.
When darkness inclines towards lanterns it inclines

Then the inherited texts grant him what their bellies hold,
So traditions grant him what is in their cores
and from his breast he gives and bestows the surplus of learning.
And from his breast he gives superfluities and grants

And makes brothers in God, for it

Opens doors of issues that were locked

And being alone in every seclusion

With righteous brothers wherever he turns

And for God's sake, seek knowledge earnestly,
And for knowledge, be a serious seeker in God
for the diligent seeker of a thing succeeds.
For the seeker attains the thing sought

Do not ruin your worldly life with toil, mortal as you are;
And do not destroy the fleeting world with your toil
for you are indeed mortal, and so is what you toil for.
For you will pass away, and He for whom you toil remains

I fear that when a gathering is choked with people,
I fear when the gathering is crowded with people
and you are asked about most questions, you will grimace.
And you are asked the most difficult questions, you will falter

Are you pleased that after Jama'a, knowledge, wisdom and piety
and abundant generosity should depart after Jum‘ah,
And the flowing of bounty will diminish?

By growth of flowers and overflowing streams on the meadow

The sons of Maddad are lesson enough through time
It is enough that the people of Midad are a lesson
for one whose intellect is like a mountain—or weightier still.
For those whose intellects are like mountains or weigh even more

Whoever mixes the true religion with passion

Becomes a lesson for both worlds and disgraced

By your parents' standing, you must obey me;
I adjure you by your parents, both obey me
far be it from a man like you to swell up against me.
For it is disgraceful for an insolent man to overflow

My life has passed, with neither knowledge truly learned nor understanding;
My life passed without knowledge or prevention
I return at evening like grazing beasts, and go out to pasture.
I frequented the resting places of the careless and wandered

If pardon for me has not already been in God's foreknowledge,
If I had no precedence in knowledge forgiving me
from God for my sin, then praise of me is blameworthy.
From God for my sins, then my praise is unseemly

And if there is no pardon, then announce the salty one
