    Take comfort, sons of Sharaf.

    For prolonged grief and anguish

    will chastise you into ruin,

and, for your father, it is of no avail.

If you are people of sense,

then do not make your eyes rain

for the loss of a father of yours, carried

    to a lonely, dark grave.

And you, gird yourselves for death,

and do not let hope distract you.

    And carry the best provisions

for the day of promise and regret.

Some of us bid others farewell,

and all of us are laid within the earth,

whether we dislike it or consent:

for this is an unchanging promise.

For this abode is an abode of passing away,

an abode of sorrow, an abode of suffering,

    of all-pervading poverty and wealth,

    of refuge and downfall.

    No one remains in it,

nor is there a protector against death,

nor a charm-healer against its sting,

    nor a skilled practitioner's stratagem.

The pools of death—no one can dispense

with them, and so avoid coming to drink.

    إِذا وافاه لم يقف

    Yet every man has an appointed term;

when it reaches him, it will not pause.

So our world, and we who live within it,

    are like someone heedless, unaware,

    and, in likeness, like beasts

that grazed in an untouched meadow.

Then, if they saw their hunter,

they turned from their native grounds,

    and feared their schemer's harm,

and headed for the lofty mountain peaks.

    But when their huntsman disappeared,

their quivering flanks grew still within them,

and their hunting grounds made them exult

at grazing on wormwood and ṭahf herbage.

So here I am, a likeness of them,

for here hope has beguiled us,

And none of us has taken warning

from what befell those gone before.

They became lessons for those with understanding,

    passing from successors into forebears.

    So, kings and commoners alike,

    the prudent and the foolish,

    the wealthy and the destitute,

    have become cast-off carrion.

    and live at your tables

a life of plenty and comfort.

I counsel you to be mindful of God:

so obey the one who counsels you.

For death will count you all,

    with compulsion and violence.

And be obedient to your mother,

    And all of you be noble;

let your boy be a father

to you, and practice good conduct,

    to save you from ruin.

    If your youngest becomes—

    by your fortune—your elder,

and is your leader among you,

you have reached the summit of honor.

    What I say suffices you—enough.

    So beware of injustice.
