Reproach has made honey like bitter spurge in the throat,

and estrangement has shown me patience to be a kind of folly.

If the coldness I suffer after your kindness

were cast upon the horizon, it would become narrower than a cleft.

O you who have become such that, were the sun to vanish, it would be folded away,

    or were lightning absent, no lightning's gleam would flash in rainclouds;

and were the glittering stars to set, they would stop short

of the west and recoil in aversion toward the east.

    فكيف بأَحقاب خلون بلا رفق

    Lightning poured forth, unable to endure an hour's estrangement;

then what of ages passed without gentleness?

God be your aid! Heed not the thunder of enviers:

many a thunderer drives clouds that bring no rain.

And turn your pure thought toward growth that is fresh

and whose fragrance is delicate; the hidden essence lies in the evening draught.

For I am the first-place finisher on every racing-ground,

while others are apparently last-place runners, whether tethered or racing.

    God has forbidden me to adopt base dispositions;

my character has never been foul in all my life, nor has my form.

Yet whenever God lavishes a blessing

on a servant, an envier or a false friend rivals him.

Long before this, Adam was envied for his excellence,

and in place of his paradise was given the eastern mountain.

And Abel was made to drink death by his brother's hand,

and Joseph, after the pit, was cast into prison.

How often a star has stung the radiant sun,

though hidden, clothing the spacious horizon in darkness.

Nor did God speak to His interlocutor and send him back

to his people except after the swoon.

I have no fault among these people except that I am

Juhaynah of secrets and a stout spear of sustenance.

Mercy, I implore you, O light of guidance and son of its light,

and O chosen one of the Creator, entrusted with creation!

Is there no kindly turn, like dawn gloating over night,

to drive out dark anger with radiant favors?

Will you not efface reproach with a final verse

of pardon, that you may be pleased with us and preserve us?

Will you not make clear the road along the path of favor,

and bar me from the roads that lead to your reproach?

Is there no limit or end to your reproach?

Does not a master grow angry, then pardon his bondsman?

Have you no proof in us of loyal zeal,

that you might allow us ample excuse and restrain disloyalty?

    وأَي امرئ يُقلى إِذا انقاد للحق

    And if I have sinned, here I am, repentant;

what man is hated once he submits to the truth?

Enemies may speak both truth and falsehood,

so a forbearing man does not take it all as true.

My expectation of you has spoken—expectation is my scout—

If you do not give me free rein, what withholds my due?

So the luckless man settles for a measure of fulfillment,

short of sufficiency, after weariness and love.

If preserving my dignity will not intercede for me

with you, despite my faithfulness, then let my bondage intercede.

Nor am I a sinner, that I should seek an intercessor

with you today, other than yourself, from all creation.

Should I repay you with arrogance, in nearness and separation,

when your kindness has adorned my neck like a necklace?

Yet when success proves elusive to a seeker,

what recourse has one striving toward it without success?

And I know that whenever I speak humbly,

the enemies hold nothing back against me and spare nothing.

But far be it! No shame attaches to a polisher of praise,

and I am worthy of pardon and emancipation.

For you deserve the choicest praise:

how often has a meadow bestowed praise upon pouring rain!
