فيin جدةJeddah فبليso my afflictions (reading uncertain) ياO جدةJeddah جددrenewed
No newly acquired wealth remains with me—no, nor inherited wealth.
I have no joy, no children to delight me
In Jeddah, my afflictions—O Jeddah—are renewed.
In Jeddah – so farewell to you, O Jeddah!

And when a man's hand is emptied of his wealth,
When a man’s wealth fails, his hand cut off,
he has no power whatsoever among mankind.
He has no place forever in either world.

Never is a young man's breast constricted by straitened wealth [probable reading]
Never did a young man’s frustration make
without the town also becoming too narrow for his disposition.
His homeland too confining but his nature narrowed it.

Ah, a burning liver—besides the bondage of his exile!
Hot liver, not chains, burns the exile,
And the body wastes away whenever the liver burns.
And the body decays when the liver grows hot.

If night lulls the carefree to sleep, I spend it in
Sleepless I lie, my thoughts all anguish
the bitterness of separation, trembling like one tormented.
From the pain of separation, tossing like one diseased.

How can a man’s eyes be filled with tears
in Jeddah, with no friend—no, nor inherited wealth?
In Jeddah where he has neither friend nor child?

I am the stranger; Jeddah has become my homeland,
I the stranger have made Jeddah my home
as though it were the grave, with no refuge for me there.
As if it were my grave – no kin waits for me.

As though I were Yunus, and Jeddah had been made for me
As if I were Jonah with Jeddah for whale
a whale; there I can neither begin nor repeat [probable reading].
I have neither hands nor means of escape.

I wheel like a bird above its nest, lifted by
I moan like a bird circling its ravaged nest,
a cloud of separation, by which misery itself is outstripped.
Borne on a cloud of woe, wrapped in misery.

My two helpers betrayed me: patience and good consolation,
Patience and composure have betrayed me,
while the two tormentors remained faithful: sorrow and sleeplessness.
While sorrow and grief remain true.

A stranger far from home has no recourse but sorrow
An exile has no choice but grief
and a tear that drips, streaming down the cheek.
And weeping, with tears flooding his cheek.

What is the plight of one distant, far from his homelands,
What is the state of one far from his homeland,
from whom Layla, patience, and endurance have all departed?
Parted from his beloved, needing patience and fortitude?

He yearns for his home, she for her love –
and his habit in loving her is affection that has never ceased.
Her passion for him always longing.

I have no patience to forgo meeting Layla, though she is far away;
I cannot be patient, far from my love,
love is the same, in nearness and in distance.
Love is the same, near or distant.

And how can I bear being apart from one, when no diversion reaches
How can I be patient with one who does not
my heart from thoughts of her, after separation's decrees?
Understand my heart, now my vows are binding?

My passion for her always flows.

But my love and devotion have no end.

I have a sigh for love of her that never grows still,
I sigh ceaselessly for her love,
and on the cheek of my affection lie furrows for my flowing tears.
With tears forever streaming down my cheek.

I loved her while my cheek was still without hair,
I loved her while I was still a beardless youth,
and I panted for her, all my hair [unclear; perhaps curly].
And when my beard grew, still I loved only her.
