I yearn for Layla, and Layla is my heart’s desire.
I yearn for Layla though Layla has turned away from me,
With the yearning of camels awaiting their fifth-day drink, or a she-camel anxious over her male calf.
My heart pines with a burning love none can comprehend.

لليل وحق أن يذوب لها لبي
And who could blame me if my heart melts with longing
If those who blame me say my heart has melted like dew,
For Layla? It is fitting that my mind should melt for her.
They speak the truth, for it dissolves for her as ice in sun.

وعشت بها صب الهوى أيما صب
I loved her as a child, an old man, and a youth,
I loved her as a child, as a youth, and now in old age,
And lived lovesick for her—what a lovesick lover!
I lived for her, pouring out passion however it would flow.

لليل وحسبي ما شغفت بها حسبي
And enough for me is the burning sorrow and longing within me
I'm content with the love and melting I feel within,
For Layla; my passion for her is enough for me—enough.
And content for my heart to ache so fiercely for Layla.

When travelers leave for pilgrimage to Mecca's holy shores,
Am a brother to burning longing that bows toward that caravan?
I wish to join them, for my spirit longs to make that trek.

And turn aside with us at Wadi al-Atiq, my companions.’
And, "Wind with me through the valley, my companions."

But they say, "Layla of noble birth is far beyond your reach,
And you lies the distance between the riding-camels on al-Ghabi;
As far as riders over the dunes stretching to the horizon."

You may wish for union with her, but without her consent,

You'll wander endless desert, drifting like the sands.

So I told them that I turn to God in hope,
I say to them, "To God I look for guidance and for grace,
And ask Him for access to those veils.
I ask that He allow me to lift the veils that hide her face."
