    Farewell, O pure Prophet!

For how many a proud man has parting laid low!

I bid you farewell this morning, and my eye's tears

could almost sweep a child along with their flow.

As though my eye's tears, on the day I am parted from

the sight of you, were Scorpio's downpour.

As though their course upon my cheek were a neighbor,

sharpening my razor with them [reading uncertain].

And when bidding farewell to one you love—by my life—

with parting near, the dull-witted one stands revealed.

As though fire's flint were in my heart,

with a flame, and burning within my entrails.

As though sharp blades were in my heart,

sated and slaked upon my lifeblood.

Though I am clothed in sorrows,

in bidding you farewell, I am stripped of patience.

My visit to you made me forget my loved ones,

but at farewell I am grief-stricken.

And were it not for poverty and dependants in my care,

concern for whom is my secret confidant,

    فما أنا في حقيقك أسمحي

    I would not have left your grave for the blink of an eye;

for I am not lax about what is your due [wording uncertain].

Nor shall I forget you, though I am carried far away

by far-flung separation in a distant land.

And the sweetest of the nights I ever knew

was the evening I laid down my staves before you [reading uncertain].

And the most wretched thing I have known or shall know

is parting from you, when stubborn tears began to flow.

Perhaps, at farewell, you are pleased with me

and accept my visit—then I am happy.

For if you accept both my states,

though I be poor, I am the rich one.

And my hopes hasten toward you yourself,

but away from you, their pace is weary.

And before meeting you, they had been emaciated,

and since I returned, they have flesh and fat.
