    Farewell, O month, farewell!

For departure has drawn near and come calling.

And parting has frightened people's hearts,

and how many a beloved's loss has terrified me!

And how can we go on after separation,

when parting has undone our togetherness?

You were our beloved, and we would

fear that you might resolve to depart.

But every gathering, once within it cries

the raven of separation, splits utterly apart.

You tormented our hearts with parting, so that

at your mention, O Abu Fitr, I burn with grief.

Your lovely nights have passed away from us,

along with days that sped swiftly by us.

You passed us like a dream-vision that greeted

its greeter—and how blissful the repose!

And you turned the reins without sorrow,

or longing that can never be borne or endured.

And who could blame us on your account if

we weep in anguish after parting from you?

We truly grew accustomed to your praiseworthy devotions,

and have parted from you ever since we were young.

It is fitting that we melt with longing for you

and stretch our arms toward you in farewell.

And every arrival leads to a return,

even if death notices for the mourned multiply.

O month of fasting, will you ever return,

so that through your return we may redress our anguish?

You have indeed polished rust-stained hearts

and sanctified the proclaimer and what is proclaimed.

Through you we kept company with the angels of heaven

and grew attached to mosques and congregations.

And how many a saint have you clothed in your light,

just as it filled the cities and the lands!

When night grew dark, it spread within it,

and throughout all seven layered heavens it spread.

And within you is the night in which is decreed

every affair, for harm and for benefit.

For the Night of Decree equals a thousand months,

granting success to the diligent one who obeyed.

And how many virtues are yours, beyond all counting!

You departed bearing them, while goodness from you spread abroad.

You have left—if only I knew whether my sin was,

at this farewell, erased or still taken into account.

So may you be cared for, month of Ramadan—may you be cared for!

Parting from you after our closeness has filled us with dread.

May God grant us a reunion,

and replace wasted deeds with His good pleasure.
