Behold, the heart is enthralled by love of Layla—

the noble lady, not Layla al-Akhyaliyya.

And I have lived in her love; beneath me lived

Qays in his love for Layla al-Amiriyya.

I am captive to Layla's love; beneath me

Ghaylan lived, a captive to Mayya.

They say that joy comes with loving Layla,

if one afterward brings a gift.

Who, then, would blame me if I said, 'My soul

is a gift for Layla, with nothing withheld'?

I shall brave calamities and ride them,

and cover distance after distance for her.

For my resolve for her is not paltry,

nor is my aspiration for her flagging.

I shall set above the saddles of the mounts

    my nests, morning and evening.

I travel secretly through the heart of night,

and as midmorning rises, part of the mount's load.

I shall forsake every clear, sweet watering place,

and water my mounts at every algae-covered spring.

And leave behind each vast wilderness crossed

by a far-ranging mount of the fleet Arhabi breed.

In my eagerness, I leave them hollow-flanked,

exhausted, no longer easy-trotting or sturdy.

When Ibn Daya, the crow, alights on their humps,

then it fears neither a grunt nor harm.

And sometimes I ride a ship, beside which blows

toward Layla a fierce gale, with a knife within it.

Her voyagers invoke God's name whenever

a northeasterly wind blows upon her.

And she has set Suhayl behind her,

    and Naʿsh to the northwest,

while we sit along her sides,

and our eyes glance about, thick-lashed.
