وقوف سؤال وهو مما تخالفت

أَولو الحق فيه وادعى الحق أَصوبا

Suspension pending inquiry is a matter over which

A stop for questioning, which is what the people of truth

the adherents of truth have differed, each claiming the more correct view.

Disagreed about, each claiming more rightness

وقد أَوجبوا فيه التخطي وأَشرعوا

وقد أَوجبوا فيه التخطي وأَشرعوا

به اللعن حتى كلهم فيه أَطنبا

به اللعن حتى كلهم فيه أَطنبا

They have required moving beyond it, and sanctioned

They made obligatory to skip it and made

cursing on its account, until each of them expounded on it at length.

Cursing through it permissible, until all excessively did so

وأَما وقوف للضلال فإنه

وأَما وقوف للضلال فإنه

وقوف دخيل العقل فيه تذبذبا

وقوف دخيل العقل فيه تذبذبا

As for suspension arising from error, it is

As for a stop due to misguidance, it

the suspension of one whose reason is unsound, wavering in it

Is the stop of one whose intellect in it wavers,

من المحدث الجاني وعن من يواله

من المحدث الجاني وعن من يواله

وعن من تبرا منه للوقوف أَو حبا

وعن من تبرا منه للوقوف أَو حبا

concerning the guilty wrongdoer and whoever gives him allegiance,

Of the heretical innovator and whoever aligns with him

and concerning whoever disavows him, on account of suspension or love.

And whoever absolves himself of it, whether stopping or in love

كذلك أَشكال الوقوف فإنه

كذلك أَشكال الوقوف فإنه

إِذا الفئتان للقتال تألبا

إِذا الفئتان للقتال تألبا

Likewise are the forms of suspension; it occurs

Likewise the ambiguous stops, for when

when the two factions rally for battle,

The two parties prepare for battle

أَو الرجلان أَحدثا فتخالعا

أَو الرجلان أَحدثا فتخالعا

ولم تدر أَصل الحدث حتى تصوبا

ولم تدر أَصل الحدث حتى تصوبا

or two men cause an incident, then disavow one another,

Or the two men innovate then disagree

and you do not know the incident's origin well enough to judge rightly.

And you do not know the origin of the innovation until you correct

وأَما وقوف للسلامة أَن تَرى

وأَما وقوف للسلامة أَن تَرى

وليّك يأتي ما جهلت ويركبا

وليّك يأتي ما جهلت ويركبا

As for suspension for safety, it is when you see

And a stop for safety, that you see

your ally doing and engaging in something you do not understand.

Your guardian coming with what you did not know and rides

فبعض رأي دينا وقوفك بعد ذا

فبعض رأي دينا وقوفك بعد ذا

وبعض رآه وهو رأي تهذبا

وبعض رآه وهو رأي تهذبا

Some considered your suspension after that a religious duty,

So some of the view is religion in your sight after this

while others regarded it as a well-considered opinion.

And some saw it, and it is the view you should cultivate

وأَما وقوف الدين فالناس كلهم

وأَما وقوف الدين فالناس كلهم

وقوفك دينا عنهم كي ترى النبا

وقوفك دينا عنهم كي ترى النبا

As for religious suspension: all people—

And the stop for religion, all people

you withhold judgment about them as a religious duty, so that you may learn the news.

Your stop from them is religion so you can see the prophethood

فمن بان منه فعل شر فعادِه

فمن بان منه فعل شر فعادِه

ومن بان منه الرشد والخير فاحبِبا

ومن بان منه الرشد والخير فاحبِبا

Then whoever manifests an evil deed, be his enemy;

So whoever shows evil from it, oppose him

and whoever manifests right guidance and goodness, love him.

And whoever shows righteousness and good from it, then love
