Life is fresh, and time is plentiful.
Life is fleeting, and time gallops by,
I delight in revelry at dawn’s first light,
إنيindeed I ليعجبنيtruly delights me الزناfornication فيin سحرةa predawn hour
ويروقand delights ليme بالجاشريةover the dawn draught زيرُa lute’s treble string
Indeed, fornication before dawn delights me,
And I fancy drink from an earthen jug.
And a lute’s treble string charms me over the dawn draught.
When morning’s radiance peeks through the veil,

And I almost, from sheer joy, when there appears
I’m overcome with joy and feel I could fly.
The morning light through the curtains, take flight.

And when I see the sky in silvery guise,
With clouds adorning its flanks here and there,
With clouds in broken patterns along its edges,
Like an immaculate bride whose chest is bejeweled

Patterned like a hawk’s breast, as though it were
With glittering gems of azure and crystal,
Turquoise adorned with crystal,
Pleasures beckon me to seize the day,

The pleasures call to me: “Alas for you—seize
So I answer the call, O blissful fool!
The chances to fulfill your wishes, O deluded one!”
My thirst leads me to the wine-sellers’ lane,

Turn me toward the cupbearers’ injustice, for I
For I crave the pourers of the cup when it makes the rounds.
Love those who serve the cup when they deal unjustly.
And many a tryst have I with the vine,

This—and how many a drunken bout I’ve had at al-Junayna!
Left giddy by the dregs of the wine.
I remain hungover from the lingering effects of that drinking.
I coaxed the first fruit from its branches,

I visited it early, its branches firmly planted,
With water gushing through its conduits.
And the water between its planting ridges panic-stricken.

In a party of six: I, my drinking companion, a singing slave-girl,
A goblet, a flute, a tambourine, and a lute -
And the cup, the pipe, and the tanbur.
We six make merry through the night.
