With gray hair, there is no talk of love.

We have been diverted from it by the guest who has arrived.

I am not one with whom a guest alights,

only for the guest to find him too busy to attend to him.

You, O gray hair, are just like the sword:

white in hue, and bidding for death.

And [seas?] have surged within my mind,

yet [my palate?] has not a trace of moisture.

And a friend from whose affection I gain

    nothing genuine except fear.

What makes me suffer is bitter colocynth,

while what I hear from him is honey.

The blow of a hand that wrongs me distressed him,

and he wished to shoulder the burden for me.

He said, 'May it be paralyzed!' and claimed this as a prayer,

while in his heart he prays, 'No paralysis!'

You are neither foe nor ally to me; for not

everyone who embraces a sword is a hero.

What frightens me is that he keeps vigil for me,

awakening eyes within me to watch for tricks.

As for the night of al-nays [unclear], I do not fear that

through it the world will relive the Day of the Camel.
