صَحاsobered up الدَهرُTime لَكِنbut بَعدَafter ماthat طالَlasted long سُكرُهُits drunkenness
وَماand not كانَwas إِلّاexcept مِنَfrom دَمِblood البَغيِoppression خَمرُهُits wine
Time has sobered, but only after its drunkenness had lasted long.
And its wine was made from nothing but the blood of oppression.
أَقَمتَyou imposed عَلَيهِupon it الحَدَّthe prescribed punishment بِالحَدِّwith the edge ضارِباًstriking
بِسَيفٍwith a sword إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle اِهتَزَّswayed قَدindeed بانَbecame apparent سُكرُهُits drunkenness
You imposed the prescribed punishment upon it, striking with the edge,
With a sword whose drunkenness shows whenever it sways.
عُلاكُمyour glory عُلىًlofty grandeur أَسكَرتَهُmade it drunk بِمُدامِهاwith its wine
فَلَمso did not يَجنِcommit a wrong إِلّاexcept that قامَarose بِالسُكرِthrough drunkenness عُذرُهُits excuse
Your glory is a grandeur that made it drunk on its wine;
So it never committed a wrong without drunkenness furnishing its excuse.
فَمَنso whoever كانَwas ذاpossessing هَمٍّa worry فَقَدthen indeed زالَdeparted هَمُّهُhis worry
وَمَنand whoever كانَwas ذاpossessing نَذرٍa vow فَقَدthen indeed حَلَّfell due نَذرُهُhis vow
Thus whoever had a worry has seen his worry depart,
And whoever had a vow, his vow has now fallen due.
فَياso O مَلِكاًa king لاnot يَملِكُmasters الخَطبُcalamity صَبرَهُhis patience
كَماjust as أَنَّهُthat he لاnot يُجهَلُis unknown الدَهرَthroughout time شُكرُهُhis gratitude
So, O king whose patience no calamity can master,
Just as his gratitude is never unknown throughout time.
يَجوزُpasses عَلىover الهاماتِheads عادِلُjust سَيفِهِhis sword
وَيَجريand takes effect عَلىupon أَهلِthose who issue الأَوامِرِcommands أَمرُهُhis command
His just sword passes over heads,
And his command holds sway over those who issue commands.
لَقَدindeed قُمتَyou stood فيin نَصرِsupport of النَبِيِّthe Prophet وَآلِهِand his family
مَقاماًa stand عَلىincumbent upon الرَحمَنِthe Most Merciful قَدindeed حَقَّbecame due أَجرُهُits reward
You indeed stood in support of the Prophet and his family,
A stand whose reward is surely due from the Most Merciful.
سَرىjourneyed by night مَلِكُthe king of الإِفرَنجِthe Franks يَنصُرُaiding جَمعَهُمtheir host
فَماso not ضَرَّهُمharmed them فيin نُصرَةِsupport of الحَقِّthe truth كُفرُهُhis unbelief
The king of the Franks journeyed by night to aid their host;
So his unbelief did them no harm in championing the truth.
وَماand not هِيَit إِلّاexcept آيَةٌa sign نَبَوِيَّةٌprophetic
أَقامَتraised up لَهُمfor them بِالنَفعِwith benefit مَنْone who خيفَwas feared ضُرُّهُhis harm
And this is nothing but a prophetic sign,
Which raised up for their benefit one whose harm was feared.
وَعادَتُهُمand their custom منfrom قَبلُbefore آيَةُa sign جَدِّهِمtheir grandfather
فَينصُرُهُمso aids them مَنone who لاnot يُؤَمَّلُis hoped for نَصرُهُhis help
And their custom of old is their grandfather's sign:
Thus one whose help is not hoped for comes to their aid.
