1. هَذا غَريمِيَ في الغَرامِ

    أَينَ التَعاطي في المَلامِ

    This is my rival in love.

    Where is the exchange of reproach?

  2. يا مَن تَدَرَّعَ بِالَقا

    تِلِ ما أَغَرَّكَ بِالسِهامِ

    O you who have armored yourself with the slayer,

    what has deceived you concerning arrows?

  3. إِنَّ الشَجاعَةَ في العَزا

    ئِمِ لا الشَجاعَةُ في الكَلامِ

    Indeed, courage lies in firm resolves,

    not in courage expressed in words.

  4. هَذا يَسيرُ إِلى السِرا

    رِ وَذا يُقيمُ عَلى التَمامِ

    This one moves toward the moon’s dark phase,

    while that one remains at fullness.

  5. الحُسنُ فيهِ مُخاصِمي

    وَيَعَزُّني عِندَ الخِصامِ

    The beauty in him is my adversary,

    and overpowers me in dispute.

  6. أَقسَمتُ ما أَرضى بِمَن

    قَد قُلتُ يُشبِهُهُ غُلامي

    I have sworn I will not be content with one

    whom I have said my lad resembles.

  7. فَليُرغَم القَمَرُ الَّذي

    في وَجهِهِ أَثَرُ الرَغامِ

    So let the moon be humbled in the dust—

    the one whose face bears a trace of dust.

  8. إِن قُلتَ حُسنَ الوَجهِ نا

    لَ فَلَم يَنَل حُسنَ القَوامِ

    If you say he has attained beauty of face,

    still, he has not attained beauty of form.

  9. ما كانَ مَضروبُ الغَما

    مِ نَظيرَ مَضروبِ اللِثامِ

    Never has one cloaked in clouds

    been the equal of one cloaked in a face-veil.
