The messenger went to the beloved and returned,

And he bore a look that told the tale anew.

Speak, O messenger, for I have a heart in love

Which the resident sorrows have named a land.

If you did not come from him in spring,

Then Jumādā lay upon my flanks whenever I arrived.

Embers of estrangement are inscribed upon the

heart, having drawn their ink from sorrows.

Not one gentle word did you bring, nor

a reproach did you bring, nor a promised meeting.

Since you said, “He did not fully deliver the message, remaining silent,”

We said, “Nor did the one summoned answer the call.”

    أَفَلا صَبَرتَ عَسى يَصيرُ رَمادا

    And you claimed that anger had kindled his embers;

Why, then, did you not wait? They might have turned to ash.
