عِذارُهُhis cheek-down قَدalready سَبىcaptured طَرفيmy gaze تَطَرُّفُهُits spreading to the edge
وَشَفَّنيand wore me thin مِنهُfrom him صَرفٌa misfortune لَستُI am not أَصرِفُهُI avert it
The edging of his cheek-down has already captured my gaze.
His reproach has captivated my eyes with its excess
And a misfortune from him has worn me thin, one I cannot avert.
And I was healed of it by a diversion I do not divert
وَخِلتُand I thought عَزمَةَthe resolve صَبريof my patience عَنهُwithout him ماضِيَةًfirm
فَاِستَوقَفَthen held back الصَبرَpatience عَنfrom عَزميmy resolve تَوَقُّفُهُhis hesitation
And I thought my resolve to endure without him was firm;
And the resolve of my patience towards it went away
then his hesitation held my patience back from my resolve.
So patience stopped my resolve by its hesitation

This is a book you read with the heart's eye;
This is a book read by the eye of the heart
its letters are too fine for readers' eyes.
Its letters drip away from the eyes of readers
ماnot صورَةُthe form الحُسنِof beauty إِلّاexcept سورَةٌa Qur'anic chapter نَزَلَتwas revealed

Beauty's form is nothing but a surah revealed;
The image of beauty is nothing but a revealed chapter
then how can its sacred volume not accept kisses?
So how can its manuscript not accept kissing?
إِنif يُصبِحِbecomes الوَردُthe rose لاnot يُغريstirs الغَرامَpassion بِهِfor it

If passion for the rose should go unstirred
If roses in the morning do not excite love
by its weak form, how then has its doubled form stirred it?
Then by what has its weakness excited its weakened?
فَياso, oh لَهُfor him مِنof حَبيبٍa beloved هانَgrew lowly مَجلِسُهُhis seat
وَياand oh لَهُfor him مِنof مُحِبٍّa lover عَزَّgrew exalted مَوقِفُهُhis standing
So, what a beloved, whose seat has grown lowly!
Oh, what a beloved whose gathering has become lowly
And what a lover, whose standing has grown exalted!
And what a lover whose stance has become dear
