Tears ask the dwelling’s traces about you.

And sleep has broken the seals of secrets.

For love is a fire whose touch does not lie,

and separation holds something of the torment of fire.

Stand in the noonday heat, this for that, for often

you slept there through the hours before dawn.

O heart, how have you remained after loved ones

departed, contenting yourself with the dwelling in their stead?

A stone [reading uncertain]: you were created, struck with it; and in it I find

weariness, while its rest lies with the stones.

As for the nights there, they are as they always were,

in the garb of darkness, not of light.

It is not the nights there that I seek, but rather

the moons who once dwelt within it.

Time is nothing but a deceitful money-changer.

If only its deceit concerned the dinar!

It took the radiant stars from among our loved ones

from that dwelling, and exchanged them for these blossoms.

I have said, when spring stirred longing with its light:

You did not make me forget, but reminded me through the blossoms.

O its anemone, you never follow its right guidance [wording uncertain]:

a harvest nourished with water, yet bearing fire.

And perhaps the lovers’ blood had already reached it

before the early coming of the first rains.

And perhaps the blackness of their hearts is in its heart,

for their affliction lies where feelings are concealed.

O departing ones, with my eye’s script of you—

    but no—how far from acknowledgment!

It will bring you back from a sign [wording unclear], on a night

languid, which I then follow with the vigor of day.

The dwelling is a loan, as are its inhabitants.

So, alas, however long the meeting, they are things on loan.

O companion of the days, beware a companionship

feared alike in its coming and its going.

So when a young man has experienced his time [reading uncertain], let it not

lead you into evil among the wicked.

For life is as short as can be, and our lifespan—

they speak of it as the longest of lives.
