فَلاso not أَهُزُّI shake رِجالاًmen لاno اِهتِزازَstirring لَهُمin them
وَلاand not يُطالَبُis asked نَفسُitself الجِذعِthe trunk بِالرُطَبِfor ripe dates
So I do not shake men who cannot be stirred,
I do not shake men who have no trembling,
Nor is the trunk itself asked for ripe dates.
Nor does the soul of the trunk ask for moisture.
وَالشَمسُand the sun لاnot تُسلَبُis stripped of الأَنوارَthe radiance كاسِفَةًeclipsed
فَليَندَرِجso let it be included سوءُillness طَبعِnature اللَيلِof the night فيin الذَنَبِthe tail
And the sun is not stripped of its radiance when eclipsed;
The sun is not robbed of its light in sadness,
So let the night’s ill nature take its place at the tail end.
So let the evil of the night's nature roll into sin.
عَوامِرُdwellers البَحرِof the sea تَجريsail الحارِثونَthe tillers بِهاaboard them
فَكَيفَso how يُحمىis forbidden عَلَيهِمto them مَطلَبُthe search for القُلُبِthe wells
The sea’s dwellers sail, with the tillers aboard them;
Ships of the sea, the ploughmen run them,
So how can the search for wells be forbidden to them?
So how can their hearts' desires be protected?
لاnot أَتَّقيI fear الإِثمَsin فيin تَحذيرِwarning against قَصدِهِمُapproaching them
بَلrather لاnot أُؤَمِّلُهُI hope for it فيamong جُملَةِthe totality of القُرَبِacts of devotion
I fear no sin in warning against approaching them;
I do not fear sin in warning their intent,
Rather, I do not hope to count it among acts of devotion.
But I do not hope for it among all relatives.
