On your account, I reproach the days,

And how fiercely I seek vengeance on them for you!

And I am their adversary; when we demand our due,

Then the judges are the outcomes.

    I expect that the nights

    Are mothers of wonders.

By God, I shall have no drinking companions

After you, O Hilal, except the stars.

And I shall surely weep for you with clouds,

More than the clouds themselves have wept.

Let nothing remind you, O flowing tears,

Of his bounty except the pouring clouds.

The sword-edges of his valor were blunted,

After those blades had been driven deep.

    He mastered experience, yet calamities

Do not come as experience would predict.

And they have their targets; yet how often

Have they struck those who were not their targets!

    And man is overpowered in

    His planning, and God prevails.
