    O Shujaʿ, son of Shawar, son of Mujir,

    O great one, descended from every great forebear,

    the two of ancient standing in an ancient age,

    not two newcomers in a later age.

    The earth shines from your radiant faces,

    with lamps that precede the lamps of light.

    God gave Adam glad tidings of your father,

    so joy began in that herald’s time.

    He came, by nature inclined to good, overcoming what dwells

    in every nature: the evils hidden there.

    What tongues, and what faces—

    they are worthy peers of pulpit and throne!

    And you were raised, and generosity grew up with you,

    in the burrows of clouds, not in laps.

    And generosity grew in your hands until

    it overflowed in them—and do not say, “Like the seas.”

    Those are truly salt water, as God has declared,

    bitterly briny—and your bounty is like pure, sweet water.

    The moment a son was born to your father

    marked the beginning of proclaiming God’s oneness and greatness.

    Water hides in the clouds out of shame

    at their bounty, and conceals itself in the well.

    فيهِ روحي وَراحَتي وَسُروري

    Every part of me has something from him to occupy it;

    in him are my soul, my comfort, and my joy.

    His generosity is in my fingertips, and praise of him

    on my tongue, and love for him in my inmost self.

    O you who think ill of time, there comes

    his granting of your wish before any dubious promise.

    And all his favors are firm resolves,

    severing the bonds of delay.

    The foremost men have the foremost seats at every gathering

    where other men of high station are not foremost.

    ثُمَّ لا خَيرَ بَعدَهُم في كَثيرِ

    And many they are, and much is the good among them;

    yet beyond them there is no good in any multitude.

    فَاِرجِعِ السَمعَ هَل تَرى مِن فُطورِ

    They wear their honor white and smooth;

    so listen again: do you see any rifts?

    وَالثَناءُ المَبثوثُ ريحُ القُبورُ

    Among the dead, theirs are the sweetest-scented graves;

    and praise spread abroad is the scent of graves.

    So you see them in color, coolness, and fragrance,

    and in peace, like a waft of camphor.
