    وَيا بارِحاً أَفنى خَواطِرَنا بَرحا

    O distant one, whose remoteness has consumed our eyes;

    And O departing one, who has consumed our thoughts with anguish;

    And O you—I lost my heart when I sought union with you.

    And would that its safety had been my gain!

    Sorrow! Who will tend my heart, if only I could find it solace?

    And who will tend my tongue, should I prolong its explanation?

    فَلا أَظلِمُ الظَلما أُسائِلُها الصُبحا

    I knew not where dawn lay among your encampments;

    So I will not wrong the darkness by asking it for dawn.

    فَهَل أَتَّقي مِنها إِذا ضَعُفَت طَرحا

    I share my longing with it, and it weighs heavy as a burden;

    Shall I then fear being cast off by it when it grows weak?

    وَجَدتُ لِمَسراهُ عَلى كَبِدي نَضحا

    A delicate breeze, like saliva I have sipped;

    I found the moisture of its passage upon my liver.

    فَإِن فاتَني لَمعاً فَما فاتَني لَمحا

    It visits as lightning visits, or as your cheerful countenance does;

    If its flash eluded me, its glimpse did not.

    Why have you held its reins back from me?

    And why have you infected its nature with stinginess?

    It returns ailing, but its healing does not return.

    By my life, you have indeed added a wound to your wounded one.

    And it spurred on mounts exhausted from blowing,

    Resting at noon among acacias—alas for its weariness!

    And had my breaths increased like its blowing,

    I would have been generous with my life, not with its breaths.

    A love from which the hands of wasting sickness wrote within me

    Lines: I saw time erased, yet they were not erased.

    And the pupil of my eye, over you, opposed its heart:

    This was quenched by anguish; that floated, swimming.

    فَإِن عادَني نَفحاً يُعاوِدْكُمُ لَفحا

    A trusted one, it recounted every heart's tale;

    If it visits me with a soft breath, it will revisit you with scorching heat.

    وَلَكِن أَمينُ الحُبِّ يَتَّهِمُ النُصحا

    And O my adviser, you did not betray me in your counsel;

    Yet love's faithful guardian mistrusts counsel.

    فَأَلّا ضَرَبتَ الذِكرَ عَن مُسرِفٍ صَفحا

    And I know that love is a sin—you told me truly;

    Then why not turn your admonition aside from one who goes too far?

    And tell the one who blames him, though before him lie

    Hopes and hardship: whom, O weary-footed one, do you blame?

    Do you spread rumors that a drunken heart has sobered?

    That is mere rumor; if it sobers, it will prove true.

    وَعُذرُ الهَوى العُذرِيِّ بِالمَنزِلِ الأَضحى

    On the farthest bank are the reproacher and his reproach;

    The defense of chaste, 'Udhri love is in the brighter abode.

    Shall I forget what lies between me and their faces,

    Especially a face that unveiled a dawn for love?

    لِأَحبابِهِ مِن سَهلِها أَيُّما بَطحا

    To his reproachers, what a hill its rugged ground offers;

    To his lovers, what a plain its level ground offers!

    فَما آنَسَت مِنها حَواسِدُها قَدحا

    Virtues that kindled their firestones for noble heights;

    Yet their enviers discerned no fault in them.

    فَها أَنا لا ذَمّاً أَصوغُ وَلا مَدحا

    My resolve refused the company of despair and resignation;

    So here I am, composing neither blame nor praise.

    فَلَستُ أَرى حَرباً يُديمُ وَلا صُلحا

    I refrained from thanking time or blaming it;

    For I do not see it sustain either war or peace.

    And if a wound has touched me, its like has touched

    My enemy; so I do not complain of the wound to its inflicter.

    O people of grief, people find consolation in one another.

    And who at evening has the same span of life he had at dawn?

    Take consolation in us: taking consolation is generosity.

    So do not grieve: grief is stinginess, and let there be no stinginess.

    وَإِلّا فَهذا مِن بَني عَمِّهِ لَحّا

    To me, grief is nothing but miserliness itself;

    Or else it is a close cousin of it.

    Do not listen to gilded speech and wishes,

    For often they explained what brought my mind no relief.

    If every success ends in parting from it,

    Then whoever made his promised meeting succeed has failed.

    O you who consult tears about concealing your secret,

    It is enough that you hoped for loyal counsel from a traitor.

    Are not the eye's tears among their watchers?

    When they rise as dawn, the tears' flood cloaks them in dusk.

    وَلَولا اِنصِداعُ القَلبِ ما أَلِفَ الرَشحا

    Its seepage betrays what is inside the vessel;

    Were the heart not cracked, it would never have known seepage.

    Abu al-Fath, O opener of every marvel,

    How many a mind you engaged, yet it refused to open!

    فَبِاللَهِ لا تَحسُد عَلى الآجِنِ السَفحا

    A torrent's clear water refuses to settle on a summit;

    So, by God, do not envy the mountain's foot its stagnant water.

    And O lion of scribes, scatter their ranks

    When your two hands gird on a spear made from a pen.

    فَلَمّا أَراهُ الرَأْيُ عارِضَهُ اِستَصحى

    I marveled when a wrongdoer asked your cloud for rain;

    But when judgment showed him its looming cloud, he asked for clear skies.

    You unveiled pearls to the ears, for they

    Had gathered them in assemblies at Eid al-Adha.

    It befits Ibrahim to incorporate its like:

    Isma'il's safety, when he was spared slaughter.

    A radiant opening revealed in him a champion of pulpits,

    Growing brighter when an orator gives it wider scope.

    And rhymed prose, the cooing rhyme of doves, swayed us

    Like bending boughs—may they ransom your gentle rhyme.

    إِذا مَدَحَ السَجعَ الفَتى أَنَّبَ النَبحا

    We praised it with praise that contains blame for others;

    When a young man praises cooing rhyme, he rebukes barking.

    طَوى كاشِحٌ عَن أَن يُساجِلَها الكَشحا

    How many proclamations of wisdom have been circulated from him;

    A secret foe turned his flank away rather than compete with them.

    Proclamations, so long as the seal is their wrapping,

    Are unharmed by being neither clay-sealed nor bound.

    The nights turn through both their modes to plot against us:

    Withholding brings a death-knell; granting brings a blow.

    Had they not waged war, with darkness as their battle dust,

    The hand of generosity would not have couched a spear in them.

    Even if the flock of their good fortune is safe from the wolf,

    Dawn has a wolf that will frighten it at pasture.

    When dwellings are shaken by charging steeds,

    May they not stir you at dawn or alarm you with their panting.

    Nor may faces be hidden from us across the distance,

    Even ugliness complained when it cloaked their features in ugliness.

    And goodness remains with you, its saddle's resting place,

    When worry wears down its weary hopes.

    فَإِنَّ وَراءَ القَدحِ زَنداً وَرى قَدحا

    Let enemies not strike at the firesteel of his bounty;

    For behind that striking lies a firesteel that has kindled sparks.

    Through him, they never lacked their footing on a night journey,

    Nor lost their free-ranging course in a day of toil.

    How often I was told, 'A sea!' and said, 'You speak truly':

    It hoards its pearls and freely gives its salt.

    Leave it: in the passage of nights are marvels.

    It will carry them toward ruin, and us onward in song.

    It is time: it doubles its deeds, though it is one.

    Is the horizon, when clouded, other than the one that was sunlit?

    Their wealth never reached beyond themselves, so they were not truly rich.

    If it pours without watering any pools, it has not poured.
