خَليلَيَّmy two friends قَدindeed اَبصَرتُI saw عَيشِيَmy life بَعدَهُafter him
كَأَنّيas though I قَدindeed أَبصَرتُI saw عَيشِيَmy life مِنfrom بَعديafter me
My two friends, I have seen my life after him,
My beloved, I now see that my life after you
As though I had seen my life after I myself was gone.
Is as though I see my life after me.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was أَشكوI complain البُعدَseparation وَالقُربُwhile nearness يُرتَجىis hoped for
فَكَيفَhow, then أَكونُI am اليَومَtoday فيin اليَأسِdespair وَالبُعدِand separation
And I used to lament separation while reunion could still be hoped for;
I used to complain of distance, though nearness was hoped for.
How, then, do I fare today, amid despair and separation?
How can I be today in despair and distance?
وَكانَand was أَجَلُّthe gravest الخَطبِaffliction عِندِيَto me صَدُّهُhis rejection
فَمَنwho, then ليfor me وَطوبىand bliss لَوif رَجَعتُI returned إِلىto الصَدِّrejection
And his rejection was my gravest affliction;
The gravest thing to me was his aloofness.
Who, then, is there for me? What bliss if I could return to rejection!
Who now remains for me, would that I return to aloofness!
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle فَقَدتَyou lose الأُنسَcompanionship مِمَّنfrom one whom تُحِبُّهُyou love him
فَنَفسُكَthen your own self لاnot المَحبوبُthe beloved أَفجَعُmore grievous بِالفَقدِin loss
When you lose the companionship of someone you love,
When you lose the intimacy of one whom you love,
Then your own self, not the beloved, is the more grievous loss.
It is yourself, not the beloved, that keenly feels the loss.
فَنيتُI perished أَسىًof grief لمّاwhen بَقيتَyou remained مَكارِماًnoble deeds
فَأَصبَحتَso you became فيin دارٍa dwelling وَأَصبَحتُand I became فيin لَحدِa grave
I perished of grief, while you lived on as noble deeds;
I perished from grief when you remained virtuous.
Thus you came to dwell in a home, while I came to dwell in a grave.
So you came to live in a house, and I in a grave.
لَيَهنِكَmay it gladden you مِنfrom بَعدِafter الرَدىdeath باقيenduring الثَناpraise
وَإِنand though كُنتَyou are مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath الثَرىthe soil بالِيَworn-out البُردِthe cloak
May the praise that endures gladden you after death,
May your life after destruction remain, though you are
Though you lie beneath the soil in a worn-out cloak.
Under the earth, subject to chill rot.
