My eyelids refused sleep, and my side refused a prepared bed.

My eyes plunged into water, and my heart into flame.

For mine is a heart whose inward burden never lightens,

And mine is an eye whose stream of tears never dries.

My companion consoles me with the sun in the east,

But my sun is the sun the west has claimed.

Between me and companionship after you, and hopes,

And time, my reproachers, and sweet sleep, there is war.

I have a wayward passion for you that strays and does not understand,

And a burning anguish for you that races on and never dies down.

    فَأَينَ الهَوى مِمَّن يُكِبُّ وَمَن يَكبو

    Reproach walked into my hearing headlong, upon its face;

What has love to do with one who falls headlong or stumbles?

    فَلَيسَ لَهُ لُبٌّ وَلَيسَ لَنا لُبُّ

    Each of us has intoxication, and sobriety within his intoxication;

So he has no reason, and neither do we.

My life as ransom for him whose mouth holds gleaming teeth and wine,

On which I am drunk, though I have yet to finish a draught.

I see it as the thirsty see a cloud,

Seeing thirst quenched beside it, if only its pouring were granted.

What would it cost love to fulfill its covenant?

Then, if not—if not—love has already fulfilled its promise.

My tears are adherents of that face's tradition,

Rubbing their cheeks in dust, as dust is known.

Nearness and distance are alike to me: in either,

Near, with no distance; far, with no nearness.

He has her estrangement, whether she withdraws or draws near,

And her belief in her slanderer; so the lovesick one cannot rejoice.

This love has a gate, and entering it is easy,

As it always was; but leaving is the hard part.

In life there is a meaning no ignorant person knows:

Listen, you sleepers—alas for you, awake!

Though the one summoned has already risen in answer to the call,

He has made everyone who knew no longing yearn toward him,

With cloudlike bounty, after which these clouds can only

Be hauled and dragged face-down within their horizon.

It comes to the hopeful without an intermediary,

So entreaty and earning do not occupy people.

He is shooting stars in radiance when he pierces hopes,

Swiftly; yet, if you judge him fairly, he is rainclouds.

Thus one knows, with him, a world free of harm,

And keeps company, with him, with a time free of blame.

May hearts remain subjects of our lord,

For anguish does not govern them under his rule.

May the world never lack a Nasiri hand,

Under which drought dies and abundance comes to life.

In his heart are affection and mercy for people,

And in their hearts he inspires awe and love.

He gives without limit and runs beyond all bounds,

So our pursuer and those behind him tire in following him.

May this bounty give freely as long as the rain gives,

And through it ruined dwellings bloom as long as the hills bloom.

Great books have not counted even the smallest of these deeds,

Even if books contained what books have contained.

Deeds whose glory, if you seek to count it,

My saying suffices for you: no reckoning encompasses it.

    وَأَخطَأتُ بَدرُ التَمِّ لَيسَ لَهُ صَحبُ

    He preserved for me—may God preserve him—the noblest companionship;

But I was mistaken: the full moon has no companions.

He changed me from a state in which I melted with pity

Into a state whose flanks pride has set swaying.

He brought me from a gathering of companionship into a court,

Where my life finds ease and my rank elevation.

My eye beholds Kisra's dominion and throne,

And there my ear hears what the Arabs have said.

His beautiful form delighted me, and he showed me greater

Favor, until his sweet character delighted me.

Cruel time had been at war with me,

But in your presence war has laid down its burdens.

Qualities of excellence whose nearness has brought me happiness,

So no kind of greatness has escaped my eye.

O sorrow: war, then no peace thereafter!

O time: peace, with no complaint from us afterward!

Toward you I boarded ships that run like scorpions,

Across a viper of waves whose crests leap up.

    فَلا تَذكُرَنَّ الشُهبَ بَعدُ فَما الشُهبُ

    No journey finds purification except at the sea;

So mention gray mounts no more—what are gray mounts?

On land you steer the tawny mounts as you ride,

But here the tawny mounts steer you.

If they say the sea is rest for travelers,

Then tell me how much travelers tire anywhere else.

    وَلَم يَستَرِح جِسمٌ إِذا تَعِبَ القَلبُ

    In every condition, judgment rests upon the heart;

No body rests when the heart is weary.

The deep has bright swords, which on the shore are spears,

Through which stabbing and blows are stirred within souls.

As though we were letters, and the ships half-lines,

The east wind folds them up, and its waves are scrolls.

I traveled by night to one whose house cannot be avoided

By night travel whose riders gales and crosswinds hand to one another.

O garden, do not deceive hopes with your freshness:

Your shade is not pure and cool, nor your life lush.

O sea, what is all this clattering?

Your pearls are not in view, nor is your water sweet.

    And you—no, by God!—you carry

In your wandering mind a terror of his generosity.

    فَكَم وَإِلى كَم ذا التَغَطمُطُ وَالعَبُّ

    Yet you have not carried the burden he bears;

How much, and for how long, this roaring and surging?

Of all they frightened us with and spread rumors about, nothing is here

But waves that reel and curse one another.

O wind, its wind has no generosity

By which the drowning are rescued and travelers spared drowning.

We have four things concerning him, unaccompanied by four others,

Distilled by speech and made sincere by a heart:

Hope without fear, support without caprice,

Sincere counsel without deceit, description without lies.

    إِذا ذُكِرَت يَصغو إِلى قَطرِها التُربُ

    In you are fruits whose like we have brought;

When they are mentioned, the earth inclines toward their drops.

Forbearance that is piety, generosity that is wealth,

A hand that is the upper hand, a character that is spacious,

A sight that is bliss, a judgment that is guidance,

Paths that are the best, a head that is a sharp sword.

The proudest thing in the sea is the pearl of its drops,

So take my verse—it is your fresh pearl.

Among the foremost poems: when permission is sought for them

By their first lines, the veils fly apart.

Easy speech beside which wishes grow easy,

And decisive discourse beside which grave affairs grow easy.

It grows delicate, and the east wind slips unseen toward its breezes,

When it carries a secret that makes the lovesick lover tender.

I unsheathe it as a sword against time: whenever

Its recitation is repeated, the blow is repeated.

Though people before me have spoken stars in your praise,

This is the pole star for all that has revolved in your sky.

People have written down my verse and made fair copies

Of much in its wake, for what you bestow.

I set out, and no omen-reader deterred my departure,

Nor did repeated lamentation turn back the gallant man's resolve.

Neither geomancy is feared nor bird-divination dreaded:

Who is Thu'al, once I have resolved, and who is Lihb?

Either acceptance, and the foremost seat in heaven,

Or rejection, and death and dust.

If Thamud claims all the water,

    Tell Qudar—woe to him!—the camel-calf has bellowed.

Admonish them that water is apportioned justly:

I have a day's share of drinking after them, and they have their share.
