لاmay … not كُنتُماyou two be خِلَّينِtwo friends قَدindeed لَزِمانيthey both clung to me
بِاللَومِwith blame وَهوَand it حَقيقَةٌa truth لِزَمانيfor my times
May you two be friends no more—you have hounded me
with blame, though it is truly due to my times.
نادىcalled to حُسامُكَyour keen sword كُلَّevery خالِعِone casting off ربقَةٍa tether

لَمdid not يَسكُنِrest in الأَجفانَthe scabbards إِلّاexcept بَعدَafter ماthat
أَمسىcame to be كَراناour slumber ساكِنَresting in الأَجفانِthe eyelids

And its deadly stroke shows you a rogue's quick wit,
and its rays reveal a coward's heart.

Words have always waited for it
to stir wondrous meanings through them.

بِيَدٍwith a hand فَماthen not تَلقاهُماyou meet them both بِلِسانِwith a tongue
So too the two generous ones: unless they give
with the hand, you will not meet them with the tongue.
