سَقى اللَهُ أَرضَ الغوطَتَينِ وَأَهلَها

فَلي بِحَنوبِ الغَواطَتَينِ جُنونُ
May God water the land of the two Ghoutas and its people.
May God water the land of the two Ghoutas and its people.
For the south of the two Ghoutas, a madness is mine.
For I am mad with longing for the southern reaches of the two Ghoutas.

Whenever the soul remembers her, I am stirred
And whenever my soul recalls it, I am stirred
toward the downpour of the two Nayrabs’ water—driven by longing.
by longing for the rainwater of the two Nayrabs.
وَقَدand already كانَwas شَكّيفيmy doubt about الفِراقِparting مُرَوِّعيwhat terrified me
وَقَد كانَ شَكّيفي الفِراقِ مُرَوِّعي
فَكَيفَso how أَكونُI shall be اليَومَtoday وَهوَwhile it is يَقينُcertainty
فَكَيفَ أَكونُ اليَومَ وَهوَ يَقينُ
Once, even doubt of separation was what terrified me;
And my uncertainty about parting had already terrified me;
how am I to be today, now that it is certain?
how, then, shall I fare today, when it is certain?
