    فَإِنَّ أَعدى عَدُوٍّ عِندَنا الهَرَبُ

    Indeed, yours is the pursuit of your enemies;

    for to us the deadliest enemy is flight.

    You are life, beyond which nothing remains to desire,

    or death, before which nothing remains to fear.

    Whatever ships they board cannot protect them,

    and whatever journeys they make on earth cannot save them.

    Neither horse-saddle nor camel-saddle can bear them,

    and neither house nor tent-ropes can shelter them.

    لَكِنَّهُم بِسُيوفِ اللَهِ قَد ضُرِبوا

    Their armor is merely where they meet their death;

    they have indeed been struck by God's swords.

    Whoever wavers in the duty of obeying you

    has nowhere to move in God's lands.

    If the horizon's clouds concealed hypocrisy toward you,

    the shooting stars would battle them until they dispersed.

    To one who said, 'The enemies have leapt,' I said, 'Yes—

    as moths leap into their flames.'

    Let people not marvel when they kindle strife:

    rebellion is fire, and its kindler is its firewood.

    كَذَلِكَ الكَأسُ لِلأَلبابِ تَنتَهِبُ

    A cup of rebellion plunders minds;

    so too does the drinking-cup rob minds.

    Nor is it strange if your might exacts

    with the blade's edge the penalty for that cup they drank.

    How often, while calamity's noses were humbled,

    you discharged the duties owed to God.

    You have a sword's collar for necks when

    collars and rods no longer serve among the people.

    Those cups called swords bear

    bubbles of watered steel along their rims.

    O sun of my age! Yet the cord of the age's hopeful seeker

    does not snap like the sun's rays.

    Tell the one who brings the stars' alarming rumors:

    this sun is not one that a comet's tail can eclipse.

    The signs of its sovereignty stand fixed in glory,

    while the sign of its wealth turns toward generosity.

    How often you struck with a sword that has no sheath,

    just as you advanced with an army that has no clamor,

    until you sent flying necks that had no blood

    and won the plunder of souls that had no spoils.

    Sheathe your swords: the world punishes them.

    Sleep: the nights take turns on your behalf.

    Every lightning flash you watch brings rain,

    and every target you seek is near.

    The garment of whoever opposes you is a shroud,

    just as the homes of whoever disobeys you are graves.

    فَلَن يُضيعَ حُقوقاً أَصلُها النَسَبُ

    You appointed Fortune your agent, O its sons;

    it will not neglect rights founded upon kinship.

    Through its hand you attained what you wished,

    and neither toil nor weariness touched you.

    فَاليَومَ لَم يَبقَ مِن أَفعالِها عَجَبُ

    Each day its deeds bring us a marvel;

    today no deed of its remains surprising.

    مُقَرِّبٌ حَتفَها التَقريبُ وَالخَبَبُ

    Your enemies' heads were driven onward by their feet;

    their cantering and trotting hasten their doom.

    They find death from your swords sweet,

    as though the blows held honey within them.

    وَاليَومَ ذَلَّت عَلى أَعقابِها العَرَبُ

    The non-Arabs submitted to you in earlier times;

    today the Arabs have submitted in their wake.

    You did not act as lions against your state's enemies

    with this lion-like ferocity until they grew rabid.

    Timbers will not grow pliant when you straighten them,

    but blades grow pliant when you unsheathe them.

    نَعَم وَيُثمِرُ مِن أَعدائِها الخَشَبُ

    A little of your fortune makes the branch bear fruit for it;

    yes, even the wood of its enemies bears fruit.

    وَالقَومُ ما اِرتَفَعوا إِلّا إِذا صُلِبوا

    You granted their wishes to rise high;

    those people rose only when they were crucified.

    Each day is a preacher upon its pulpit,

    and calamity makes heard what sermons cannot.

    If any of those people remain after it,

    even a portion of this slaughter steals lifetimes.

    تَفنى وَتَفنى عَلى آثارِها العُصَبُ

    Heads cannot survive such treatment;

    they perish, and bands perish in their wake.

    Let them not expect a misfortune to visit you:

    calamities themselves are among your glory's supporters.

    Let them not suppose kingship something you acquire yourself:

    kingship is acquired by God's command.

    مالٌ وَلَيسَ كَمِثلِ المالِ يُغتَصَبُ

    It is a secret, not revealed like some secrets;

    it is wealth, not seized like ordinary wealth.

    Let every deluded man abandon longing for it; it has,

    despite them, no desire for any but its rightful lords.

    If their stride grows bolder after those people,

    the slender Khatti spears stretch their strides toward it.

    You tipped them with glances, so no veil hid

    from them the inner thoughts masked in reform.

    Every tribe that disobeyed what you command

    they showed that its staff, with them, is splinters.

    Are your swords eyes within their sheaths,

    as though watching for the necks of rebellion?

    Were fear of your majesty not so abundant,

    they would leap from their sheaths at those people.

    O son of noble men! Even without his lineage's merit,

    a soul to which excellence traces its descent would suffice him.

    O brother of excellence among us, and son of its father,

    how many a father sprung from yours has guaranteed a conquest!

    You meet enemies with enemies; tell this as a marvel:

    crosses have served Guidance in its victory.

    لَها الذَوائِبُ مِن أَعدائِكُم عَذَبُ

    The turbans of brown spears in your right hands are peaks;

    your enemies' forelocks are their fluttering tassels.

    Spearheads crowd above your coats of mail,

    as bubbles crowd upon the watering place.

    Punishment, when it comes

    from them, has causes; their gifts have none.

    Like fate when they pursue, like death when they rage,

    like wind when they ride, like lightning when they leap.

    Tell of them through their deeds, without restraint:

    no one marvels at conquest when they conquer.

    You have put the lofty ranks at ease; of anyone else

    they have misgivings when he bows above them.

    لَكِن لَها بَعدَ ما صِرتُم بِها الرُتَبُ

    Before your glory, we did not call them ranks;

    only since you occupied them have they possessed rank.

    I do not say you have reached beyond their utmost height:

    this is the beginning; the ends are still awaited.

    Sleep: Fortune's eyes guard you.

    How could a father not guard a son against his enemies?

    It is good fortune: when it strikes with its arm,

    nab‘ wood shatters under the willow's blows.

    فَما بِها شَغَبٌ يُخشى وَلا سَغَبُ

    May Egypt enjoy prosperity and safety together;

    there is no unrest to fear within her, nor hunger.

    Egypt is nothing but a bride in your time,

    unveiled, with domed pavilions fashioned from her pyramids.

    Stop by her: Shuja‘ is a lion guarding her.

    She is safety; destruction is hemmed in by her.

    Each day within her is a wedding, and its gathering

    contains the swords dyed at that wedding.

    You were aided as the Chosen One was aided; you have

    two armies—terror is the lesser in securing your victory.

    You acted prudently when you eradicated her disease, for through it

    other lands are infected, as experience has shown with mange.

    With a leap that overtakes enemies at leisure,

    as though earnestness in its deeds were play.

    Were it not for their disdain for the world, I would think

    from their cheerfulness that they were given the wealth they gave.

    Were it not for their accustomed victories, I would think

    from their contempt for enemies that they had been defeated.

    وَالقَطرُ ريقَتُهُ وَالأَنجُمُ الشَنَبُ

    The clouds' mouth kisses the earth in their presence;

    rain is its saliva, and the stars its gleaming teeth.

    Generous deeds—since their swelling tide overflowed the earth,

    the clouds have stopped raining over foes, fearing those deeds.

    Lightning flashes on the clouds' cheeks in shame,

    and thunder's voice along their edges is clamor.

    فَلا تَقُل سُحُبٌ بَل قُل لَها قُلُبُ

    They fall short of lofty forbearance and generosity;

    so call them not clouds, but wells.

    بَلِ السَحابُ الَّذي أَمطارُهُ ذَهَبُ

    Clouds are not those whose rain is drops of water;

    true clouds are those whose rain is gold.

    God bless Shuja‘'s face! Its sign

    shines like dawn; anger has not effaced it.

    Rage is fire, but within his folds

    it is clear, cool water, with no flame there.

    God bless what he conceals from us and what he reveals

    among us; for God's sake are all he does and shuns.

    وَمَن أَرابَ فَما في قُربِهِ أَرَبُ

    I have never seen two colors in his character;

    whoever rouses suspicion offers no reason to seek his company.

    O Kamil, through whom God has made perfection known:

    it is his name, though they suppose it a title.

    O you whose light of goodness keeps veiling you

    from us, though no such veils lie between us.

    أَستَغفِرُ اللَهَ بَل لا حازَتِ الكُتُبُ

    You have attained excellence that books have not encompassed;

    I ask God's forgiveness—rather, may books never encompass it!

    My appearance tells of your overflowing bounty,

    as grass tells of abundant rain.

    How much can thoughts dictate, even at full power,

    and what is the utmost that days and books can make heard?

    If I speak of you, my words fall short,

    coming as they happen, not as they ought.

    What can I say when all praise falls below you?

    Saddlebags and ages praise you before I do.

    I do not fear that the days will overcome me:

    if you command my support, victory is mine.

    إِذا سَلِمتَ فَأَنتَ المالُ وَالنَشَبُ

    I care neither for wealth nor possessions;

    if you are safe, you are my wealth and possessions.

    Were you upon the earth—but you are high in heaven—

    I would say I was there your distant neighbor.

    So listen, confidant of the Commander of the Faithful,

    to pearls that show you other pearls are mere glass beads.

    فَالصَمتُ لِلبِكرِ رَسمٌ حينَ تُختَطَبُ

    She is a virgin: if she remained silent an age, it is no wonder;

    silence is a virgin's custom when sought in marriage.

    When I raid the discerning man's hearing with her,

    she returns with spoils of his wit in her hand.

    For lips there are draughts from her cups,

    and for ears, choice selections from her sounds.

    She is delicate and pleasing to hearing and sight:

    the jewelry is cast, the water poured.

    Had I no natural gift for poetry, I would not

    doubt that I could acquire it from this glory.

    Remain safe despite the days of time, as

    you desire and seek, while we and the ages perish.

    And may time never turn against a king whose

    learning and refinement incline toward the paths of generosity.
