    كَفى تَراجُعُنا مِن أَلسُنِ الكُتُبِ

    I wish we could converse with our own tongues;

    Enough of our exchanges through the tongues of letters!

    How many letters of greeting have been entrusted

    To the dream-phantom, the lightning, the winds, and the clouds!

    And the dream-phantom's speech is not free of anguish,

    Nor the speech of the wind's breeze free of calamities,

    Nor the smile on lightning's face free of flattery,

    Nor the clouds' falling tears free of hailstones.

    And in meeting—if only time would grant it—

    Lies pure, unmingled conversation.

    There a fire blazed, yet nothing burned

    But my ribs; nor did I kindle it with firewood.

    وَالمَوتُ مِن صُحبَةِ الدُنيا عَلى غَضَبِ

    I kept my world company, with no contentment as companion;

    And death is angered by companionship with this world.

    A saying to which the eloquent lend an ear; yet

    Whoever tastes it tastes no kind of honey.

    This lover, hastening on his way toward you—

    Do you think he will return from you, his haste unrewarded?

    Long-lived is his love for you, and joyful

    His hope in you—like wine and its bubbles.
