    I see my worries greater today than yesterday.

    So let the reproachers mention neither Hind nor Asma.

    And I was not ignorant in the days of youth,

    But the day of gray hair has increased my knowledge.

    وَلَيسَ غَدٌ مِنّي فَلِمْ أَحمِلُ الهَمّا

    Yesterday passed away from me, and today ended after it;

    And tomorrow is not mine, so why should I bear worry?

    Will the days not be sated with my flesh, which they have gnawed

    Off the bone, until they cleave both flesh and bone?

    Injustice dealt justly between my body and its heart,

    When it gave each its full measure of worry and sickness.

    And both afflictions have grown easy for me to bear,

    So I let the days hear neither praise nor blame.

    They have trodden upon a rock within me and think it—

    If I do not cry 'Ah!' aloud—a solid rock.

    وَإِنّي وَإِبّاها لَكالشَمسِ وَالأَعمى

    And the days do not know my worth, because of their ignorance;

    And I and they are indeed like the sun and the blind man.

    And yesterday I thought my fate was at war with me,

    Until I learned today that it had been at peace with me.

    And it was nothing but unjust, except that

    It differed between its two days, as it dealt me still more injustice.
