    I remembered those between me and Adam,

    but found among them neither a father of mine nor a mother.

    لَقَد أَسرَجَت يا عَينُ في لَيلَةٍ ظَلما

    The world announced my death to me through a gray hair;

    indeed, O eye, it lit a lamp in a dark night.

    I have never seen a beloved enemy like the world,

    and a counselor, though it is a deaf ear.

    Indeed, it has severed my root and my branch: neither me

    nor a child has it spared, nor maternal uncle nor paternal uncle.

    Waging war, it meets you with the face of one at peace,

    and if it wears peace, that is one of war's ruses.

    وَلَولا اِبتِسامُ البيضِ لَم تَعرِفِ الدَهما

    And it gave me dignity in place of a novice's heedlessness;

    and without the white ones' smile, you would not recognize the black ones.

    فَيَقتُلُني جَهلاً وَأَقتُلُهُ عِلما

    Indeed, I have taken from my time the like of what it has taken from me;

    so it kills me in ignorance, and I kill it with knowledge.
