    I recognized your dwelling, while the caravan did not recognize it.

    My heart tells my eye of it, though my eye did not recognize it.

    وَإِنَّما خَلفَهُم أَمسى يُسَيِّرُها

    The wind meant it no harm of old when it swept it away;

    it only came to carry it along behind them.

    It has indeed been effaced, and if the wind's skirts are dragged,

    no remnant of its outline remains to trip them up.

    فَما اِستَطَعتُكِ أَفلاكاً أُسَمِّرُها

    O dwelling, you were a sphere for the spheres of love;

    yet I could not make you ships to nail together.

    You are but a bride, for whom spring

    each year provides a trousseau with what it buys.

    And the dwelling, like its inhabitants, is under its Creator's decree:

    He puts it to death and, when He wills, resurrects it.

    How many favors the clouds have bestowed upon the dwelling—

    gratefully acknowledged, and the garden's tongue gives thanks for them!
