وَليAnd I have صاحِبٌa friend ماnothing مِنهُfrom him ليfor me عِندَin time of حاجَةٍneed
سِوىexcept الحِلمِforbearance إِنindeed الحِلمَforbearance ليfor me عَنهُfrom him حاجِزُa barrier
I have a friend from whom, in time of need, I gain
Nothing but forbearance; indeed, forbearance holds me back from him.
وَكَمAnd how often قالَhe said ليto me لَولاكَbut for you لَمnot أَلقَI would have faced غَمرَةًdeep trouble
كَأَنَّas though قَضاءَthe decree of اللَهِGod لَولايَbut for me عاجِزُpowerless
How often he has told me, “But for you, I would not have faced deep trouble,”
As though God’s decree, without me, were powerless!
يُماطِلنيhe puts me off بِالشُكرِwith thanks عِندَat the time of وُجوبِهِits becoming due
وَلَكِنَّهُyet he بِالعَبِwith faultfinding (apparently intended: بِالعَيبِ) ظُلماًunjustly يُناجِزُhe acts promptly
He puts off thanking me when thanks are due,
Yet he is swift to find fault with me unjustly.
