فيin ذُنوبٍsins ماnot أُعقِبَتwere followed بِاِعتِذارِby an apology
Evening outings I joined to early-morning departures,
amid sins never followed by an apology.
لَمdid not يَعُمَّpervade المَشيبُgray hair أَسبابَthe sources of جَهليmy folly
شَيبُgrayness of شِهريmy month (probably a typo for ‘my hair’) خِلافُunlike شَيبِgrayness of شِعاريmy inner garb
Grayness has not pervaded the sources of my folly;
my hair’s grayness differs from that of my inner garb.
إِنَّindeed فيin كُلِّall of ماwhat نَوىintended المَرءُa man أَمراًa matter
واسِعاًbroad فيهِwithin it مَسلَكُthe path of الإِعتِبارِreflection
Indeed, in everything a man intends, there is a matter
within which the path of reflection is broad.
فيin دِيارِthe dwellings of الماضينَthe departed عِبرَةَa lesson of صِدقٍtruth
ثُمَّthen مِنfrom بَعدُafterward فيin مُضِيِّthe passing of الدِيارِthe dwellings
In the dwellings of the departed is a true lesson,
and then, afterward, in the passing of those dwellings.
وَقَعواthey fell فيinto خَنادِقٍtrenches مِنof قُبورِgraves
وَبَنَوهاand they built them مِنfrom فَوقabove كَالأَسوارِlike ramparts
They fell into trenches of graves,
and built them up above like ramparts.
ماnot الَتَقيناwe met بِالفَمِby mouth وَالعَينِand eye يَوماًever
وَالتَقَيناand we met بِالذِكرِthrough remembrance وَالآثارِand traces
We never once met them by mouth or eye,
yet we met them through remembrance and their traces.
ثُمَّthen مَحَّتwore away آثارُهُمtheir traces وَتَفانَتand vanished
بَعدَهُمafter them وَاللِقاءُand the meeting بِالأَخبارِthrough accounts
Then their traces wore away and vanished
after them; and we met them through accounts.
ثُمَّthen إِنَّindeed الأَخبارَthe accounts عَنهُمabout them تَناهتcame to an end
كَالتَناهيlike the ending فيin مُدَّةِthe span of الأَعمارِlifetimes
Then the accounts about them, too, came to an end,
just as the span of lifetimes comes to an end.
فَكَأَنso, as though لَمnot يَكُنthere existed فَتىa youth فيin زَمانِan age
وَكَأَنand as though لَمnot يَكُنthere existed فَتىًa youth فيin دارِa dwelling
So it was as though no youth had ever lived in any age,
and as though no youth had ever lived in any dwelling.
وَجَرَتand flowed هذَِهِthese النُفوسُsouls سُيولاًas torrents
ماnot اِستَقَرَّتsettled مِنof هَذِهِthese فيin قَرارِa resting place
And these souls flowed in torrents;
not one of these settled in a resting place.
إِنindeed دارَthe abode of القَرارِpermanence فيماin what سِواهاis other than it
فَاِستَعِدّواso prepare yourselves لِجَنَّةٍfor a garden (Paradise) أَوor نارِfire (Hell)
Indeed, the lasting abode lies elsewhere,
so prepare yourselves for the Garden or the Fire.
وَلَبِسناand we wore الشَبابَyouth لُبؤسَthe garb of (apparently intended) اللَياليthe nights
وَجَعَلناand we made المَشيبَgray hair كَالأَسحارِlike the predawn hours
And we wore youth as the raiment of nights,
and likened gray hair to the predawn hours.
وَإِذاand when ماan emphatic particle رَكَضَتyou spurred خَيلَthe steeds of التَصابيacting young
فَلِماذاthen why أَنكَرتضyou resented (apparently intended) مَسَّthe touch of الغُبارِthe dust
And when you spurred the steeds of youthful folly,
why then did you resent the touch of dust?
تَحتَbeneath ظِلِّthe shade of الجِدارِthe wall أَنتَyou مُقيمٌresiding
غَلَطاًmistakenly بَعدَafter مَيلِthe leaning of عِطفِthe side of الجِدارِthe wall
You remain beneath the wall’s shade,
mistakenly, after the wall’s side has begun to lean.
