    Do they, I wonder, hold torment to be passion,

    just as we hold parting to be death,

    and lovers' hearts to be miserly

    with them, not toward them, while eyes are generous?

    وَلَيسَ عَلى داءِ القُلوبِ سَقامُ

    He passed without a greeting, turning away yet seeking attention;

    and no sickness surpasses the malady of hearts.

    And in his face, even if he does not greet, there is a greeting,

    and a greeting meets him without a spoken salutation.

    وَحَقَّ وَقَد جارَ العِناقُ خِصامُ

    And we spent the night, and misgivings spent it with the carefree;

    and a quarrel was justified, for the embrace had acted unjustly.
